Bad echoing, long pauses of dead air, etc

Post by sisterevil »

I manageted to install my MJ very easy. When I am talking on a call I notice the following:

- all of a sudden voice on other end starts echoing. This last approx 5 seconds.
- also notice long time dead air then caller returns.
- notice beebs during call which sound like pushing a key
- can't use the phone & laptop at same time..both turn very rocky and slow.

Is there maybe a fix or file I need to add?

Seems like your problem is your internet connection. If you are using a wireless connection (sounds like you are) please try connecting directly to the router and report back.

Not wireless

Post by sisterevil »

No I am not plugged into a wireless. I do find tho if I move the phone away from the computer the enchoing and relaying sound seems to stop and just every once in a while does it. I just thought there might be a utility to add or some "tweaking" to do, I guess not, but I will keep digging for an and answer.

Try using a corded phone. If it's still bad, try testing to Boston at http://www.testyourvoip.com/ while on a failing call. Repeat, it needed, until you hear trouble during the 15 second test. Now, if the score is good, you likely have an issue with interference from other tasks on your PC or possibly a driver problem. If the score is poor, you likely have competing traffic on your Internet connection; check for file sharing or other background jobs, if you have an unsecured wireless router, check for unwanted guests. Also, try with PC connected directly to cable modem, to eliminate the router or other devices on your LAN as possible sources of trouble. (You'll need to cycle power on your modem for this test, and again when reconnecting the router.) Otherwise, you may have a problem with your modem, cable drop, excessive traffic in the neighborhood, etc.

Echo noise etc.

I did the test a few times to different cities and got the same reading 3.4 so its not bad. When I tested to Vienna it was 3.9!!!

So I am still looking for a fix as it happened so bad I couldnt talk to anyone yesterday.

For the echo, turn down the speaker and microphone volume on the soft phone to zero. For performance, optimize your MagicJack for performance using the properties in your hardware manager. If you have an older machine with a slower chip, the jack may run into some issues. Also, make sure your temporary files are clean. I don't know what this has to do when overwriting with the voip file, but it helps.
Windows Vista and Laptop with XP SP2 on the road. Occasionally, a Mac if my Windows machine isn't working.
