Dumb question...but hard to find an answer

If magic jack gives me a phone number which is consistent with the area code
in my calling area, although an exchange or first three of the seven numbers
is actually long distance ....what happens when someone locally calls my magicjack number?
Do local calls get nailed with long distance because the exchange is for an area which typically generates a long distance charge.?

Yes.................. Unless they have some type of LD calling plan, anything LD to them will be charged as such.
So I guess you will have to call them then, as it is free for you to call them
HOWEVER if they live in an area MJ deems rural then your call with not go through and be blocked.

If your Magic Jack phone number exchange is not local to the caller, the caller will be charged for a long distance call.

Thanks very very much....its hard to see so popular ..I checked the available prefex in all the available area codes for major citys...there are zillions missing...oh well any recoursive action would be appreciated in usual supplemental to MJ?

Check to see what numbers are avail for Google Voice and if one is a local call to whom calls you just give them your Google Voice number and have Google Voice ring your MJ number when they call..
Problem solved...Unless, of course, you cant find a GV # local to them.

Yes you can still receive calls using Google Voice even if your computer is off.

Yes but you need a device like the OBi 100 or 110 to do that unless you mean just having GV forward to some other number/phone.

There are a couple of ways. Like Vaham pointed out the OBi 100/110 is the easiest way. Other ways are to use Sipsorcery with an ata and a voip provider that will give you a free number like Sipgate or Ipkall. You could install asterisk like PBX in a flash or setup a paid account at pbxes.org and use them with an ata to get GV calls as well. You can get an Ooma and pay for their premiere service and setup GV extension. Out of all of them I like the OBi the best. It's simple to setup and the call quality for me so far has been great. Sipsorcery is another good option but if you don't know what your doing can be a challenge to setup. Asterisk is overkill for the average user imho. Ooma is also a good option to me but it costs $9.99 a month if I remember correctly and the cost of an Ooma Telo.

in order for them to call me....

Yes Google Voice is for US only currently at least. That is not to say that many have not used a proxy in the US and obtained a US phone number which then can be used anywhere in the world.
