Did anyone try number porting from Magic Jack ? I would be especially interested in porting to cell phone and/ or Google voice.

Available for most carriers. Ignore their 'ransom note', they cannot impede your port if you do not pay this gratuitout, extortionate service charge.

Thanks. I do not want to loose the number, but my patience with MJ after nearly three years is wearing thin.

GoogleVoice will tell you right away if the number is portable into them. My cell number is, but my MJ number isn't.

True, as I found out GV only ports numbers from cell phones at this point of time.
So the question will be whether Verizon will be able to port the MJ number to my prepaid cell. So far the indications are that they will. I may wait a few more weeks before I start the process. If that works out Obihai/GV will be most likely the next step.

Verizon just confirmed that the number is portable so see what happens.
If this works, I could get the number in the next step from prepaid to GV, G charges 20$ for that though. :)

On a "reverse number look-up", my MJ number is shown as a cell phone number. So I thought perhaps GV would see it that way as well. Obviously they didn't. I, also obviously, don't know if GV treats all MJ numbers as land-lines or not.

If anyone else does want to port out, and has a GV account, it only takes a few seconds to get your answer if it's possible or not.

Some providers treat MJ as a land line and some as a cell phone. For example, when I signed up MJ with Telna for international long distance, I had to sign it up as cell phone.
GV does not port in numbers from all cell providers, only from selected ones.

They actually sent me the ransom note for $31.80.
I am not paying it. Wonder what will happen now.

If you port a landline from ATT, they will cancel your DSL account.
Took me 6 days and 14 phone calls totaling more than 5 hrs. to get new naked DSL service. Complained to MJ by chat, they don't care.

Porting the land line did work. ATT said I should have called them first. Not sure if that would have helped, ATT's support people don't know jack.
