How do I transfer number with AT&T and DSL?

I am currently using AT&T phone and DSL. and I just setup my MJ+, I would like to know how to transfer my number without disconnecting my DSL.

Have any of you done this before? I appropriated if you can help me out of this one.

unfortunately there's no real easy way to do it without losing your internet for some amount of time. That time could be a couple hours or a couple of weeks. I'm going to assume that you registered a temporary number with magic jack. If you log into my.magicjack.com you can opt to transfer your existing number. Go ahead and do that. Remember that your number must still be working with at&t for the port to be accepted and completed. If you call at&t and request a change of service, you're taking a chance that the service change will be done before the port. Then the number is no longer yours and the port fails. Here's what I did.

1. Request port through Magic Jack website.

2. Periodically call at&t business office(every few hours or so). If Magic Jack has requested the port then the automated system will let you know that an order has been placed and it will give you the due date. The order number will be a disconnect order(*D*******).

3. Once you've confirmed the order then call at&t and request a new service for a dry dsl. Let them now about the disconnect order and that you would like the new service to be turned on the same day. If the csr knows what they're doing, they will create the new order with the same feed of you existing landline. If they don't do this then a technician will have to come out to move the outside service to the new location(not a big deal if it's the same day as the disconnect order).

4. Once the port is complete and at&t has activated the new dry dsl line you may have to re-register you at&t account online. This is very simple if you know what you're doing. Now your in business with your new dsl(which only costs $14.95 a month) and your new magic jack telephone line(which only costs $2.00 a month)!! It's a win win!!

Just so you know. If you were just disconnecting your landline and wanted to keep your dsl then you would just call at&t and request a change of service. Because you want to port your existing number it becomes a little more complicated. Such is life. Well worth the minor headache for the enormous savings as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks mjplus2000. This is exactly the information I was looking for. Based on what you have said here, I will probably hold off on the port becasue the DSL is what I use for work (I'm a telecommuter). I'll wait until I've got a vacation planned or something like that in case it takes more than one day.

At least I've been able to cancel the long distance on my home line and save $20/mo that way. I also already ported my work phone line to another MJ+. So overall the MJ is saving me quite a bit already. I just have a little more to go

No problem at all. I was down for about 12 hours(8pm-8am). wasn't a huge deal, but If they did it the right way customers wouldn't be down at all. As soon as I saw that my dsl signal was back I had to re-register the modem/router and my account online. That part was really simple. I did have to get a little pushy just to get the new service due dated for the day after the port. They wanted me to wait a few days(wasn't gonna happen). Of course, it all depend on the csr that you speak to. Good luck!!

I am thinking move to Comcast and remove AT&T all together.

You definitely will get faster speeds with cable. I probably would've went that rout myself if it weren't for the major price difference. I think Comcast wanted something like $50 a month. Got AT&T for $14.95. Couldn't pass up the deal!!

Switching to Comcast would make the process a lot easier. I think they'll come out the next day on a new install. By the time that's up and running your port will flow through and your good to go!
