Error 42 with Magic Jack Plus

Post by dkmontgomery »

I have been on line for most of the day with magicjack tech support via chat. I have had three or 4 different people to do a remote assist with my computer.

My magicjack works great as long as it is hooked to the computer. When I plug it into the router, the phone gives me error 42, check your internet connection.

I have a 2701HG-B
AT&T 2Wire Gateway

It has 4 ethernet connections and also wireless capability.

I use centurylink Broadband internet. All my cables are good and the ethernet connections are good.

I am beginning to wonder if it has to do with my internet service provider? I really don't know. THe tech support also fooled with my gateway firewall ports. I have reset and upgraded the Magicjack, etc....

Still does not work apart from the computer. Any ideas are appreciated.

Error 42

Doesn't leave too much to the imagination. If it works on your computer, but not on the router it really must be router settings conflicting with the MJ. You should consider looking on this BB for all the issues associated with router settings and give them all a go. Putting the thing into the DMZ, shutting off SIP, port forwarding, fixed LAN IP address etc. Go overboard and then if it works, go backwards and eliminate things one at a time until it fails.

Belkin N750 and ATT 2wire Gateway working great now!

Post by dkmontgomery »

Hi! Believe it or not I did just get my situation resolved. My 2 Wire has always worked great. I tried just about every thing one could do with the options and setting of the gateway. I ended up purchasing a Belkin N750 Router off of Ebay. I then installed the router through one of the 2wire ethernet ports and then I set up the new router. This solved my issue! I hooked the magic jack up to the Belkin Router and no trouble now. The Magicjack plus is working great now away from the computer.

I think there is something to do with the way the 2 Wire Gateway operates. Really not sure what the deal is. But the Belkin appears to be a great router.

Magic jack Error code 42

Post by HHOSteam »

I also instantly got the error code 42 when plugging the MJ into the network.
My quick fix seems to work
I normally use a non standard Router default gateway address
192.168.1.250 on account that I test so many other network components which always conflict with my configuration.
All I did was change the router default gateway address to 192.168.1.1. which a more standard (factory default) address
I got dial tone immediately
I also tested 192.168.1.254 without any problems
I suppose the MJ could be manually changed to accept any gateway address but I haven't figured out how to access to MJ via a browser.
Perhaps default gateway addresses in non standard ranges are the type that have a problem

Maybe this will help somebody in future
