Magic Jack Plus basic setup

I do not yet own the Magic Jack+; understand that setting it up is basically simple. My question concerns the ethernet cable. Currently my modem is DSL connecting the current ethernet cable to an APC UPS protector, then to my computer.

How do I route the MJ+ cable and is it necessary to have an internet account for MJ to work? In advance thank you for your time and support

Since the MJ is a V.O.I.P. device and the "I" in V.O.I.P stands for INTERNET, yes one needs the Internet for the MJ to work. Kinda like asking if a car has a gas engine do you need gas to make it go...uh... yeah.
BUT since you say your modem is DSL, which means you have an Internet connection, why ask if you need an Internet connection?
I "assume" you can get a RJ45 splitter if you want to have more than one Cat 5 cable to your U.P.S.

You can either plug the magicjack into your computer's USB port and keep your computer running or you will need a router so you can plug it into an Ethernet port

DSL --> UPS --> Computer --> magicJack

or

DSL --> UPS ---> Router ---> Computer and MagicJack+

I "assume" you can get a RJ45 splitter if you want to have more than one Cat 5 cable to your U.P.S.

I will apply time and see what and how I currently have cables connected to the UPS, DSL modem and computer. Do I need 2 RJ45 splitters or a Ethernet switch via UPS?

hi is your dsl modem a router to? as some are if not then u will need a router to use the mjp stand alone why not just put the ups protector between dsl modem and router so then all stuff put on router will be safe

That's a good point; as my modem is an older Westell/Bell Atlantic Infospeed DSL modem: (model B90-36R515-01) so I'm not sure if it's dual or not.

i just look up your modem and u will need a router if you want to use the MJ+ with out the computer so the last post i send wold be a good idea

I've been recently doing some research. Since my dsl modem only has the 1 ethernet port could I use a 2-4 port ethernet swtich to support MJ?

Just get a 4 port Linksys router, the word switch scares me since most are half duplex and full duplex is what you need for good VoIP phone calls.
