Voicemail waiting indicator on phone equipment not working?

Post by jc98031 »

I have a MJ+ plugged directly into the router. For some reason when someone leaves a voicemail message though MJ+ system my phone doesn't seam to indicate I have a message waiting. This feature worked on my phone equipment when I had Vonage and Ooma.

Is this feature just not working or am I doing something wrong? I turned on the Shutter tone feature on my account, rebooted the MJ+ but still no luck.

Does anyone know if this feature is supported? I am using a Uniden D3288-2 cordless phone. I would assume this is a common feature and would be supported.

Features not working...

Post by Ruejo »

Actually, there are some features with your old phone company that do not work with magicJack/magicJack PLUS.

This might be your case.

But you can do some tests, like using a different phone with the same feature. If it works, it means the first phone is no longer working.

If it still does the same thing, you may contact their chat support to see if this feature is working with them..

First, make sure that your phone's voicemail indicator function is on (i.e., to make sure that it periodically checks for a "stutter" dialtone and that its message indicator is on). Then, go into your online MJ account, go to the voicemail preferences section (or whatever) and make sure that you've enabled/turned on the stutter tone for voicemail feature.

Be aware of the fact that MJ's voicemail system is rather slow to turn on your MJ device's stutter tone, it can take up to a minute or two from the time someone leaves you a message and hangs up. Add to that the fact that some phones can take a few minutes to actually *detect* that stutter tone, and you can easily wind up with your phone's voicemail indicator not turning on for 5-6 minutes from the time someone actually leaves you a message. But MJ's system is MUCH faster at sending out voicemail email - it's usually within a minute - so one potential "work-around," if you carry a cellphone, is to simply set your MJ account to send voicemail email to your cellphone's text message email address.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will give this a try.

Tried what was suggested; however, it doesn't work. I enabled the feature on the portal and verified the settings on the phone. I also restarted both the phone and MJ+. I was also able to confirmed with MagicJack via their chat support that this feature isn't available. Bummer!

The MJ+ stutter tone voicemail indicator system is DEFINITELY working; I just tried it myself and it works (whoever you chatted with doesn't know what they're talking about).

The stutter tone sound file is actually located within the MJ+ itself; MJ voicemail simply sends a "command" to your MJ+ device to turn it on & off. So the first thing you'll want to do is plug your MJ+ into a pc to make sure it's got the current firmware version installed, and if it doesn't just let it update itself.

THEN, set up your MJ+ directly with the router once again as a stand-alone device. If you have an answering machine connected make sure that it's TURNED OFF. Then call your MJ+ number from another phone and leave a message then hang up (or ask someone else to do it for you). Do NOT pick up or answer the MJ+-connected phone. Wait up to 10 mins, *then* pick up your MJ+-connected phone and press talk or whatever you have to do to get a dial tone. If you've enabled the stutter tone in your MJ+ account online you should hear the stutter tone. If you do NOT hear the stutter tone, go online to help chat and ask them to reset your MJ+ number's account to make sure that voicemail stutter tone is enabled and activated (WHEN MJ UPDATED ITS VOICEMAIL FEATURES TO ADD TIME DELAY ADJUSTMENT ETC. MANY ACCOUNTS WERE LEFT WITHOUT STUTTER TONE ENABLED EVEN THOUGH THE WEBSITE ACCOUNT PAGE SAYS IT *IS* STILL ENABLED.).

If/when you *do* hear the stutter tone and your phone's VM indicator still hasn't turned on, your phone (for whatever reason) is simply not detecting it. If your phone's settings are otherwise correct in these regards and if your phone allows you to switch between "line mode A" and "line mode B" try switching the line mode and see if that corrects the problem. Also, many phone models that come with answering machines are designed such that they require that if you're going to use a phone company's voicemail system instead of the model's answering machine that you *turn off* the answering machine, otherwise its VM indicator may not work.

Of course, as a last resort you can go online and lengthen the MJ voicemail time delay and use an answering machine instead of MJ's voicemail system.

I get the shutter tone sound, but I think my issue is that my phone requires FSK signaling for voice mail indication. It's my understanding that the newer phones use FSK signaling and not Shutter tone to pickup new messages. I am going to chat with MagicJack to see if they plan to support FSK signaling for voice mail indication anytime soon.

Yeah some phones use only FSK, some use only stutter tone, but many support BOTH. Assuming MJ uses only stutter tone, you might want to consider calling Uniden customer service to find out if your phone can check for a stutter tone and if so how to set it to check for it & get it to light up its message waiting indicator. While most newer phones support both methods, a LOT of newer models (such as my brand new Panasonic Dect 6) have the LED turned OFF by default to save battery power (I'm not kidding!) and you have to go into the phone's settings to turn it ON. And on some phones, even if the LED is turned off the phone's lcd screen (assuming it has one) tells you when there's a message waiting.

I replaced the phone and it's now working. I needed a phone system that supported the shutter tone.
