Ringing during a phone call.

Today I was talking with my mom when I all of a sudden heard what sounded like an old telephone ring. Not a beep. It rang but I could only hear it when I put the receiver up to my ear. I looked on the caller ID...nothing. Hit flash to see if it was call waiting. No one was there. So is that ringing the caller ID or what?
