Middle-Aged Dog, Forgetting Old Tricks?

Post by Ninjaborg »

( Preamble: Feel free to skip )
Hello, all. My first post here. But, after having read a few dozen posts here, on various topics, I think I'm gonna like this place. Now! I very clearly remember being able to do certain things with MJ, that over the years ( a few of which were spent offline, at one time or another, and so not using MJ ) I seem to have forgotten how to do. In MJ's early years, it seems there was more interest in turning the stock-model Magic Jack into something a little more muscular, and a LOT more hacks for it.

( Topic )
One of those was being able to use MJ in a speakerphone capacity. To be clear, I don't mean by using an actual speakerphone. I mean using your computers' speakers, and microphone ( like a video-chat, sans video ). I used to be able to toggle between computer/speakerphone, and telephone/handset. So, you'd get a call. Both the MJ (wave file), and your phone would ring. Now, if you didn't pick up the phone handset, but clicked "Accept", the call would be routed through your computer speakers & microphone, in essence behaving as a hands-free speakerphone.
Or, if you picked up the handset, you'd simply have a normal phone call, using the phone as you normally would, via Magic Jack. Anybody have any idea how that was done?

Also, I used to be able to shut the whole MJ process off by simply clicking on the "X" button, in the upper right hand corner, Instead of minimizing it to the systray, and having to kill MJ through Task Manager, when I want it off. I remember that one being a really simple tweak, but I can't dredge up how I managed it. I'd REALLY like to be able to do that again!

Anyway. I have a list that I'll come back at you guys with, a few at a time, if that's acceptable here.

Thanks, in advance for your time, and consideration on these problems. Any help, or tips are appreciated! :)

With your magicJack connected via USB, pulldown from the "Menu" button to the first item in the menu: "Switch to Headset/Phone" designated "A" in the first image. If you want to change volume for listening or mic, try "B", "Volume/Headset Control..."

If you do try "B", you'll see the below dialog box that will allow you to toggle between telephone and Headset/Other. You'll also be able to choose which device you can use and change volume settings.

Yes, it's unfortunate, but the only way to quit out of magicJack is to either kill the app from Task Manager, as you have learned, or to unplug the device and wait for the below screen to come up and press the red x:

As of this post date, there is currently no way to edit magicJack settings when your newer device (i.e. magicJack plus) is connected directly to the router.

A lot of the hacking that was done with earlier models has been made impossible by the latest updates to magicJack.

Best of luck.
