Using MagicJack as a Fax/Modem

Hi All,

I am wondering if anyone know how I can use the MagicJack as a fax or modem? I'm guessing it would need to have some kind of analog signal (based on reading through this forum). I saw some posts about configuring SunRocket Gizmo or SIP, which seems like it may be relevant, but I don't really understand it. Would someone mind helping me out?

Jennifer: There is no real "configuration" per se.

1) Simply connect your MJ to a free USB port on your PC and make sure your PC is online (i.e., connected to the Internet)
2) Plug a phone into the MJ phone jack just to ensure that you have DialTone
3) Replace the phone by now plugging in your FAX Device into the MJ phone jack
4) If you are using an "old school" FAX device (i.e., FAX Machine with a phone handset) then simply lift up the phone to ensure that you have Dialtone -- you should be all set.
5) Send a FAX to someone or have someone send a FAX to you using your MJ phone#.

I have tried FAXing via MJ (and via ATA) from MS FAX software and other older FAX Software -- both worked without any issues. (Surprisingly, because usually FAX over VOIP is very hit or miss). In fact, it was much better than results with Vonage.

It will be VERY unlikely you will get a Dialup Modem to work over the MJ phone line -- I tested that months ago and it was a no-go. You probably don't need that assuming you already having an Internet connection to feed the MJ anyway. You would only need this is you HAD to connect to a service that ONLY allowed a Dialup Modem connection ... very rare these days.

My dialup modem works pretty well over the MJ. It is about 2/3 good on connections when run at 7200 baud rate setting.

I actually do need to connect to a service that only allows dial-up modem connection. How are you getting your modem connection to work?

Ahh, OK ... there are a few who still need to use Dialup. Interesting to know that it works sometimes @7200 baud.
