Are "local" calls to MJ free for non-MJ users

Post by Phil »

Hi -- Sorry if this question has already been asked, I looked around this board and didn't see it anywhere. I tried running this question by MJ's "online chat" tech support, but it looked like the person at the other end never really quite understood what I was asking. Anyway ...

I just bought a MagicJack and am waiting for it to arrive, so I haven't had a chance to try it out. Right now, Cincinnati (513) is listed as "pending," but I also saw that I get one free phone number change after activating the MJ. So, for the purpose of this question, let's say that it's several months from now, Cincinnati numbers have been made available, and I've switched my MJ over to a Cincy phone number.

I don't live in Cincinnati, but I've got several relatives who do. They've got ordinary, non-MJ phone service, and the entire city is within their local calling area. If they dial my Cincinnati MJ number, will it be a free, local call for them? Or will they be charged long distance? If it's long distance, how will that be charged -- at within-state rates, or between-state rates? Thanks.

Based on http://www.telcodata.us/telcodata/ocn?ocn=261E , it looks like you will get (when Cincinnati becomes available) a 513-442-xxxx . This is clearly a local call for anyone within the city. If you have relatives in the suburbs, you can ask them to look in their phonebooks to see if 513-442 is a local call for them.

Interesting.

Could you do that for 619 area code? My brother lives in San Diego, CA and his prefix is 692.
If I (live in N. CA) without an area code, select a 619 then which prefix will I get? I see under YMax several with a SNDG 209-8; 488-4; 488-5.
That means I will get one of those?

As I write this, the available exchanges in 619 are:

Code: Select all

619-467 La Mesa, CA
619-488 San Diego, CA
619-784 La Mesa, CA
619-825 La Mesa, CA
I suspect that 619-209-8xxx is exhausted, rather than pending, because I just called one at random and got MJ voicemail.

If I select area code 619, do I also get to select which prefix? Or is this a random assignment.
I'll have to ask my brother if LaMesa is a toll call, unless I can find a phone book online?

Thanks!
MJBob

EDIT: Yes, La Mesa is a local call for him. :)
