Major upgrade released -- includes volume fixes!

Post by Stewart »

http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/upgrade.exe (8,803,768 bytes)

The old code would limit mic volume to 40% at startup and let you set a maximum of 70%.

With the upgrade, if you have the newer MJ, the startup limit is 60%; you can set it up to 90%.
On the older MJ, startup limit is 55%; you can set it up to 70%.

There are many other changes, but I haven't had the time to analyze them. Please post any improvements that you observe, as well as new bugs introduced.

There is a possibility that on your system, the new code may be less reliable than the old. Backup your files first, and be sure to have a reliable alternate means of making an emergency call.

It appears that this upgrade is now being pushed -- if you restart your MJ, you will get it.

The upgrade has a fix for outbound DTMF; on a brief test, it was 100% accurate, using a phone that previously could not send DTMF through MJ at all.

The one I'm getting is only 7,464,760 bytes... It's also the same one I've been downloading the last 2-3 days.

Hmm, I still see the big one at http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/upgrade.exe .
Also, my config file still has

Code: Select all

SoftwareUpdateURL="http://upgrade.talk4free.com/upgrade/20080610000000/upgrade.exe"
How are you trying to download it?

I can access the provisioning servers ok -- if you are still getting the error, check where it is trying to fetch from, etc.

no audio devices found

Rebooted my t5700 and MJ updated. Spftphone came up and said ready for call. Then a new box pops up and says "no audio devices found". Checked cordless phone and sure enough no dialtone.... :( Haven't had time to trouble shoot yet.

Unfortunately, I think the upgrade now prevents me from spoofing. I saved a copy of the 'old' magicjack.exe (magicjack-e.exe) file with a different name, but when I try to run it, I'm required to register and then I'm automatically upgraded. Actually, that was yesterday. Today, I get a different message when I'm redirected to the Registration screen: No Serial Number Passed

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

NOTE: I'm still fussing around with it, but I was able to get the upgrade to spoof. But I don't have any sound. <sigh>

Darkman9080: I have seen "No Serial Number Passed" messages in the past during Registration when IE was setup VERY securely (since I usually use Firefox anyway and keep IE neutered).

i.e., try to temporarily put "*.talk4free.com" (and possibly "*.magicjack.com") into your "Trusted Sites" list in IE (if you are like me, you will only make it temporary!).

I forget the exact issue, but AFAIK their Registration process needs to run either JavaScript or an ActiveX Control to complete its tasks. You basically have to lower security to allow it to run. Once it is done, you can put your IE security back to original setting.

In the immortal words of the "bully kid" on the Simpsons ... "AH HA" :P

(Seriously though, not really running on a Vic-20, but longing for the simpler days when ... gas was like 75c/gallon; and 64K RAM was considered the pen-ultimate, running any program currently released. Nowadays 64k can't even fire up the splash screen. LOL)

I'm also able to get the upgrade to spoof, but again, no audio either way. When I noticed the upgrade happen the other day, I just tried my phone when I was done. When I saw the spoof work, I figured all was well. Wasn't until today that I actually tried to make a call and found the no audio problem.

Downloading the "downgrade" upgrade as linked above solved my problems for me, but I'm not sure how that'll last.

And Stewart, how are you changing your hosts files to not download the upgrades? Are you just changing upgrades.magicjack.com to 127.0.0.1 or something?

Here's what he suggested in another thread for the hosts file and it works well.

0.0.0.0 upgrade.talk4free.com

Make sure you flush the DNS (ipconfig /flushdns) after making the change.

If you are having trouble with the upgrade, restart your MJ and it should download this automatically. Or, you can install it yourself.

If you modified your hosts file to prevent upgrades, you will of course have to undo that first.

Thanks! I came into my office this a.m. and 1.) checked the CallerID Spoofer to see if there was still now sound (there wasn't), 2.) exited the spoofer and restarted MJ, 3.) made a test call to see if there was sound (there was).

Now I've just dl'd the "downgrade" and installed it.

Tested it w/out the Spoofer and it works; tested it w/ the Spoofer and it doesn't. I'll fool around with it later when I have more time.

I have no problems with the Upgrade.

The only thing I have noticed with the Upgrade is the OK and CANCEL buttons are missing from the volume control setting.
Just an X there now to x out of it, that is not really a problem though.

Same thing here.
The outgoing volume issue seems to have improved some.

Is version 1.80.4411.3084 the newest? That's what I am currently testing out on my t5710, but it is running a full version of XP.

Ditto.

It's still too quiet though. Mine can be adjusted up to about 70% now instead of 60%. :? Better, but still a bit too quiet.

a way to "stake" the volume setting?

Post by mohoelx »

Is there a way to make the volume setting stay through a re-boot? I have to jack my mic up to 100% even with this new fix to have a tolerable voice level, and I would like to have it stay where I set it, vs the "default" every time the machine reboots.

Thanks -

Check out the autohotkey (freeware) forums. I remember reading a year or so ago where someone created a nice little autohotkey script that would set the volume to your liking. Do something like that and set it to run at startup and you would have a working solution. You could write one yourself too as Autohotkey is pretty easy to script.
