How do you improve "Quality of Service" (QoS)?

Post by Roozie »

Using the following link, http://myspeed.visualware.com/voip/, I have only been able to attain a QoS rating of around 52%. I have seen other users posting ratings of 97%. Apparently, my QoS is deemed rather low so I was wondering if there are actions I can take within the Vista Operating System (my wife's Toshiba laptop) or Windows XP (my Dell laptop) that would help improve the QoS rating.

I currently have the QoS scheduler turned off within Vista and Windows XP. I have QoS enabled in my Linksys wireless router because I have seen postings that it is better to use the router's hardware feature to manage QoS rather than use software to do it. Well, I did all that, but the 52% rating does not seem too outstanding so I must be doing something wrong.

If there is anything else I should adjust or set within the router, please advise. I am just looking for any actions that should raise the QoS rating which should help improve overall VOIP communications.

Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Questions:

1) Do you get the same results from both computers?
2) What type of internet connection do you have? (i.e. DSL, cable, etc)
3) What does the rest of the report summary say? (cut and paste here)
4) Are you using wireless to connect the laptops to your network?
5) Which linksys router are you using?
6) Are there other computers on your home network?
7) What other applications are running while you are doing the test?

A little more info and perhaps someone here may be able to help figure out where the problem may lie.
