Is port triggering necessary?

When having MJ problems a while back, tech support told me to open ports: 5060 to 5070 UDP, TCP 80 and 443 on my router. I don't remember if it helped or not.

I had some power problems today and had to reset my router settings and I don't remember if the port triggering settings were set or not. I have a Linksys WRT54G

Is it neccessary to set port triggering?

I don't understand this topic either. I don't have any special rules on my WRT54GL (running Linksys firmware, and now Tomato). My MJ works fine.

The thing I don't understand about dead chat's suggestion to everyone is that 5070 is just a control port which your device opens a connection *to* when it's plugged in. When a call is made or received, the device opens a connection *to* a port anywhere between 10000 and 20000. That's where the actual voice traffic occurs.

The way dead chat instructs people to open ports, it's like they're reversing what's happening. Instead of your MJ device opening connections *to* the MJ server, it's like they're instructing customers to be prepared for the MJ server to open connections to your computer running the device.

I might be wrong, but I've never seen that behavior. I think dead chat is really instructing people to open *outbound* ports. But, it's strange because they don't mention 10000-20000 which would need to be open too.

Also, I've never seen any port in the range 5060 to 5070 used. Only 5070 is used (from what I've seen).
