Error - Please connect to the internet and double click

Post by nc14 »

My MJ experience has been not outstanding but honestly not bad for the price. However, for the last 3-4 days it has stopped working altogether. I have tried everything that I could think of like removing Norton Antivirus (I read somewhere that it might be blocking the ports). Disabling windows firewall for now. But I still get the same error message on the dialpad.

The message reads "Error - Please connect to the internet and double click here". (I am getting this error where it used to say "Ready to Call". The internet connection is perfectly fine though as I can open everything else. My area code is 216 if that helps.

I am really clueless how to fix this and get my MJ back to life. My OS is Windows Vista. I also did run the upgrade available on the customer care page of magicjack.com but that didnt help either.

I will greatly appreciated any/all help.

Thanks,
Nitin

Try running Setup.exe located in C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\ug00000.
If you're running XP it's Documents and Settings instead of Users

If it works, you might end up having to make a desktop shortcut to that file.

No guarantees, but it worked for me.

Thanks for the tip. Were you getting the same error that I am receiving? If yes, then that must be it. I will surely give it a try.

Thanks much for your suggestion. I will post back if it works.

In my trying to get rid of my "interrupted speech" problem I posted on, I have tried a number of times to forward specific ports and to place the computer I am working with at the time (working with multiple computers, wired and wireless) in the router's DMZ. I have found on a number of occasions this nasty Error 3 - reconnect and double click - to come up. It is a real pain ITA to get rid of (everything else proves the connection to the internet is active with the computer - browser and email included), but I think what has cleared it is to unplug the MJ, kill all port forwarding, turn off the computer, run the router through a complete reset, turn the computer back on and let it boot up, kill any browsers you might have set to automatically come up (I am suspecting a war between FireFox (or a FF plugin) and MJ - I am noticing a lot of bad behavior), then plug MJ back in, preferably to a different USB port on the computer. I still want to find out how to delete ALL self installed drivers and settings including ini, registry, inf and so on, on the computer and wipe the MJ brain clean, then proper reset of it, but I have way to little time to tinker with it. Heck, I have not had more than a couple days over the past week just to try to make it work without the problem I have posted on, and both Dan and the tech he specifically put on the problem have yet to be able to pinpoint the correction I need (given the limited time I have had to correspond with them, but there is no real written methodology to handle this. I am afraid that "beta" means BETA, and a little on the alpha side of the street.)

Anyway, I have had the exact same problem as you decsribe and I have been trying to pinpoint just what it takes to clear it, but so far I have only found effective to throw everything at it including the kitchen sink - go for a full reinstall without any remaining adjustments for it on the router. Though if I recall, I did not have any problem with forwarding 5060, 5070, 5060 - 5070 (all UDP) and I think I was OK with some forwarding with TCP 80 and 443, I know that once I put the computer in the DMZ and brought it back out and re-applied the settings to the router, the MJ was still stuck in Error 3, and not until I cleared the forwarding rules, then did a full (F U L L) reset of the router and computer and a change of USB ports (Everything including the kitchen sink) did I manage to clear it this last time!

Sounds like a software conflict probably in startup menu. I think it is a firewall. Check out the post on 303 and 401 error codes.

Thanks brucemc777 for your help. I am not very technical so there are a couple of questions for you. Please help. I will try what you have recommended. My set up is very basic though. I am using a http://www.utstar.com/Document_Library/0046.pdf (UT-300RTU) HIGH SPEED ADSL 2/2+ ROUTER /BRIDGE CPE Router. I dont think there is any port forwarding (atleast I didnt do it). When you said "run the router through a complete reset". What is the way to do it (other than turning the power off and putting it back on after a brief moment?). I don't having Firefox either. I will try to reinstall MJ like you suggested by trying it in a different port.

I would appreciate if you can keep us posted if you could figure out a permamnent fix or a better solution for this. (I removed Norton from my Vista installation and also have disabled my Windows Firewall to ensure that it is not the firewall, which is resulting in this stupid error)

Thanks for your response and hopefully I will be able to resolve this. Reason, I am writing this and not trying it as I have installed the MJ at my parents and would have to try it over Remote Assitance :)

Go ahead with a full power off - unplug the router - pull the MJ and turn off the computer, after several minutes (time frame recommendations seem to vary from 30 seconds to three minutes, so might as well play it safe with three) reconnect the router and let it go through it's full restart, then bring up the computer. Once it is fully up go ahead and try a different USB port. A prayer won't hurt...

Obviously they are going to have to resolve these bugs, but for now I will work on keeping records. As digitalnomad mentioned, make sure any software firewalls are off and test. I found that even if you don't have another firewall installed on your computer, the Windows firewall has a nasty habit of turning itself back on with some of the updates.

Is there anything you recall having done/installed between the time it was working and the time you found it not (I think I recall you saying it was working for a time)? If it wasn't too many days, one thing I might try would be a system restore to when it was working - it is a little bit of overkill, but if there were no critical changes you made in the time frame between working and not, it might be worth a shot.

I used to love being an alpha/beta tester for several projects, but now I have four daughters, a wife in a temporary residence on the other side of the country (not all bad) in Texas and arranging for the rest of us to move (out of Michigan, as a zillion other Michigan residents are doing, thanks to a lame shell governor, we are number one in people leaving the state), so it kind of bites into the time of trying to figure out just what the heck I am doing with anything, including when I argue with my computer.

And if that does not work, let me know and we can go on to the primary regedit stuff...

Thanks brucemc777. I greatly appreciate all your help. I did Reset the router, did the System Restore and then finally changed the USB inlet for MJ and as you said lots of prayer :)

It worked. Wow and so far so good. Would you recommend removing MJ everytime I shutdown and putting it back in again after the restart or let it stay on the USB always?

Also, best of luck for all your situations and I hope things will be smooth again very soon. Again appreciate your help and take care.

Kind of like as the experts told me when I asked about my putting together a consumer's kind of technical manual for this stuff, it probably isn't worth establishing any rules on what to do yet because in fact, we are all beta testers of the product and it will be changing under our feet - what works today very well might not work tomorrow. Just when things go bad, you have a set of tools now to throw at the darned thing, and as time goes on I am sure we will have new ones!

Glad to hear you are up and running - frankly, it makes me feel good that I actually was able to help someone out.

I had the same problem. Tech support stated to open ports 5060-5070 in the router and firewall. This should take care of the problem

I unplug my MJ, then put my laptop to sleep. I awaken the laptop, then replug the MJ. This ALWAYS works for me. When you plug in the mJ, you initiate the autorun sequence, which sets everything up. Leaving the MJ plugged in when you restart MAY not initialize the device properly. Better safe than sorry.

Run the command prompt as Administrator. cd to "C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming" and rename mjusbsp to something else. Plug-in the magicjack and let it reload.

I had exactly the same thing and this is how I fixed it.
