Should I bother to implement QoS (WRT54G Router)

Post by davrow »

First - I like my MJ enough that we have cancelled our landline after a 3 month test.

Second - I am actually satisfied with the sound quality and lag... I just think it could be better.

Third, I'm using a Linksys WRT54G Wireless router, except none of my computers are currently using the "wireless" part, all plug directly into the router. I have not put Tomato or DD-WRT on the Linksys.

So, based on all that, would you folks recommend:
1) Leave well enough alone
2) Load Tomato and set QoS on the Linksys

I'm leaning toward 2 just for the fun of it, but don't want the wife to be upset if I screw up her phone service...

I vote for #2 if your router is supported by Tomato. QoS made a big difference for me. But, my speed is only 1500/250. If you have a faster connection, and you don't saturate it with other activities, it might not make as much difference for you.

Other things that might improve your quality a little is to give the magicjack.exe process High priority (in task manager).

If you connect wirelessly to your router, try a wired connection (I noticed a differnence and I'm only 15-20 feet from the router).

I have the same router (WRT54G v8 ) and I don't think Tomato can be used on it.
The WRT54GL is the one that works with Tomato, or other firmware replacements.

my brother , (who has the WRT54GL, and looked up my model) said my model wasn't listed on the site for Tomato and compatible routers to use with it.

Boo Hoo! :( .. so , I hope he's wrong, but he couldn't find anything for my v8 series, so your's may be the same story... even if it's not the v8 model

are you saying the WRT54G v8 supports using dd-wrt but not Tomato?

Yes, that's what he's saying. The WRT54G's from v1 - v4 came with 16MB of RAM and 4MB of Flash. From v5 on, that dropped to 8MB of RAM and 2MB of flash.

DD-WRT has a version (micro) that will fit on the 2MB boxes and Tomato doesn't.

Thanks for the clarification, rezin8.

Of course, that brings up the next question. My WRT54G says it is V2.2.

So, it "should" have enough flash for Tomato or DD-WRT. How do I check the amount of flash mine has (if you know off-hand... I'll log on now and look around, but don't remember ever seeing anything that said...).

Again, thanks.
