Removing MagicJack Software Uninstaller

Post by digitalnomad »

Does anyone know of a software unistaller? This is mentioned in the TOS.

MJ does not show up in add/remove programs, or anywhere else.

I am not talking about just deleting icons.

I am looking for instructions for completely removing the MJ software from Windows operating system
and also completely removing the MJ installation folder, and from the registry.

There is no uninstaller but a manual uninstall isn't that difficult. Use Device Manager to uninstall the magicjack cdrom/disk drive/usb hub, and then unplug the magicjack device. Delete the mjusbsp directory and all subdirectories (probably at c:\documents and settings\(your user profile name)\application data\mjusbsp). Use regedit to locate the HKEY Current User Talk4Free entries and delete the Talk4Free key and all subkeys. Delete the magicjack directory and all subdirectores (probably at c:\documents and settings\(your user profile name)\local settings\application data\magicjack). Delete any start menu and desktop icons. Reboot.

That should do it.

Thanks guys. I had a Tech Chat about this with a MagicJack rep on Friday (last night), and at first she said not to worry about any software remnants residing on a machine. Yet they tell you to stick the dongle into any old computer you feel like.

After pressing some, I mentioned that an "uninstaller" was referred to in the TOS, and she provided sme brief instructions. See what you think of it here below. I don't think just deleting the setup files will do it. Looks like you would have to hit the registry.

Veronica: double click on your hard drive (usually called C:\).
In there double click on "documents and settings".
In there double click on the folder that has the username you use when logging in to Windows.
In there double click on "Application Data".
In there double click on folder called "mjusbsp".
In there double click on folder called "in00000

Veronica: You will find the set up file there.

Veronica: You may delete it.

Ru8de to not have an uninstaller, but then it is also rude to require the MJ picture to cover everything else while it is loading.

Anybody know how to uninstall this from Vista?

I was able to delete it from the device manager and to delete the registry keys, but I can't find any directory called application data anywhere on my computer. Nor can I find any magicJack, talk4free, or mjusbsp.

At least I'm trying this before I send it back. I'd hate to have sent the thing back then find out I need the physical device in order to comply with the uninstall requirement in the agreement.

1. Plug in MagicJack device.
2. Use Device Manager to Uninstall the MagicJack cdrom/disk drive/usb hub.
(Start>Right Click 'My Computer'>Properties)
3. Unplug the MagicJack device.
4. Delete the mjusbsp Directory and all Subdirectories
(probably at c:\users\(your user profile name)\app data\roaming\mjusbsp).
This is a hidden folder so you may have to click on ALT to bring up the menu bar, then click
Tools>Folder Options>View>'Show Hidden Files and Folders'
5. Use regedit to locate the HKEY_Current_User\Software\Talk4Free Delete it and all Subkeys.
6. Delete any start menu and desktop Icons.
7. Reboot.

UPDATE: I noticed that they add an entry to HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Run called cdloader. You should get rid of that as well, and the directory it is pointing to.
