How do you disable the MJ automatic updates?

I have MJ running fine now on XP and don't want an auto update to mess it up. Can someone direct me to how you disable the updates?

The sticky thread for running MJ without the USB "dongle" suggests people who do this won't receive updates either.

FWIW: I don't think the host file trick works anymore. About a month ago MJ changed something in the way they do things. Now hosts like their proxy is connected using an IP address, not a host name. That eliminated the functionality where we could change our host file to fake out MJ, causing it to connect to a different proxy.

I have a Wireshark capture from a few days ago. I just looked at it. I didn't see any DNS lookups for a host containing the word "upgrade". I found the IP address (which upgrade.talk4free.com resolves to) returned from a DNS call to resolve the name render.talk4free.com.

I'm not real good at understanding Wireshark captures. Someone who knows more about it might want to confirm whether the host file trick still works for upgrade.talk4free.com).

Anyway, the host file is in c:\windows\system32\drivers

Like Laser said, you probably shouldn't mess with it if you don't understand what it does.

I've yet to see the magicjack automatically update itself.
The only time it updates is when I do it manually.
Since an update has never broken anything for me, as far as I know, I hope it does automatically update itself. I get quite tired of going and downloading an update everytime it goes all weird on me.

There is an automatic update, but it is triggered in an interesting way so not all clients will try to get the update at once (resulting in over-loading the server).

If you just want to see if an update is available, look at the date in the "SoftwareUpdateURL" provided in the reply from the provisioning server:

When they roll out updates, the provisioning server is most likely set to turn on the "SoftwareUpdateAutoInstall" feature for one of block of serial numbers at a time to prevent the upgrade server from being over-loaded.
