I bought a magic jack a few months ago...never had a problem with it.
I installed it and a registration page popped up. I love it but....
I bought my neice one for christmas and it is a nightmare.
She is running XP Home Edition and Norton. She also uses Comcast Cable.
When I put the magic jack in a usb port nothing happens. The blue light comes on but no pop up screen. I was online with tech support for three hours and they kept giving me to other tech guys. They had me do 20 different things and nothing worked.
So I am trying to figure this out without TECH support.
Could it be the usb ports on her computer not sending enough power?
Could it be the firewall? How would I open up the correct ports?
I have downloaded the upgrade...and it says lucky you ....and then says you must connect your magic jack...but it is already in the usb port.
I have a yellow question mark by the magic jack in the device manager under dvd/cdrom...but nothing under hard drives. My system has it under both.
Also, when I go to my computer I only have one icon that loads when I plug in the magic jack...It says PHONE.....
I have tried almost everything I can think of.
Any help would be appreciated.
Please Help with Install

I would try plugging her magic jack into another computer and see what happens. If it still will not work, get back online with MJ tech support and tell them that you have a chat file with them, that you have now tried the MJ on another PC and it does not load up.
If you have already been on MJ tech support chat and it has been elevated to a higher level of support, they will have already walked you through the firewall settings and USB port settings in Device Manager. Your USB would certainly have enough power to upload the drivers for MJ, even if it did not have the capacity to make a phone ring. My bet is that she got a dead on arrival unit.
I recently went through 5 hours of tech support over 2 days with MJ for the same issue. In the end, after several elevated levels of technical assistance, they determined that my MJ dongle was defective.
I am glad for you that your Niece's Magic Jack is under 30 days old, because you may actually get a replacement. Did you buy it at a retailer locally or from Magic Jack direct? If you bought it from Magic Jack, I would aggressively pursue resolution with them to verify that either your settings are wrong on your computer or that your MJ is defective before 30 days from the time of purchase expires. If it is from Best Buy or somewhere else you can return it, I would do that soon as well.
When mine was verified by Magic Jack online support to be a defective dongle, I had been using it for exactly 40 days. Not only did they refuse to replace it, they would do nothing to give me credit or partial credit toward the purchase of another, even though I still have 10 1/2 months of my 1 year of phone service remaining. I am stuck with a dead Magic Jack and my choices are: 1. Do nothing (or go back to a land line). 2. Buy another MJ for $39.99.
The key in your situation is to not let very much time lapse.

It Works Fine On My Computer
I did what you suggested and took it home and put it on my computer.
It worked fine and the registration window popped up.
On hers....it only shows one drive called PHONE....not two
and then nothing happens.
She has Nortons and comcast cable. Could this be a router issue?
