Choppy voice

Almost all calls that I make are choppy. I have a cable modem with 7 mbs down and 360 mbs up. I have set the priority to high. I do not have a router with the modem. Is there anything that I can do to get better service. Do I need to something with the QoS of the modem or does this only relate to routers. All voip tests are green

That would give you an idea of how much QoS may help you.

If you want QoS (and have no router), your choices are to buy a router that can be flashed using Tomato or DD-WRT. The former has a lower learning curve, and there is a how-to for configuring QoS. The latter supports more routers and has more features.

My preference is a Linksys WRT54GL and Tomato. The GL is readily available and you don't have to get into a lot of funky stuff like you do with the other Linksys routers and DD-WRT. If you're a novice to intermediate computer user, I think you'll find the GL and Tomato more suitable (e.g, if you don't need advanced features associated with hotspots, etc.).

Alternatively, if you're not comfortable with the idea of flashing a router, you could buy the Hawking Broadband Booster and connect it between your computer and modem. It's just "QoS in a box."

I "ASSUME" since I use a combo DSL Modem/Router ( Siemens SpeedStream 6520) I will not be able to use the Hawkings Broadband Booster? Any other alternatives?
I am pretty sure I am not able to flash it. So just curious as to what can be used. UNLESS, of course, there IS a way to use the Hawkings.

I haven't used the BB. But, if the MJ computer is the only computer using the modem/router unit, I believe you can put the BB between the unit and your computer. (You should verify that before buying one.). You'd just never be able to use multiple computers with your modem/router (without the other computer having unfettered access to your bandwidth, reducing the benefit of applying QoS to just one computer).

I can't think of other options except to buy a separate modem and router. Then you could flash the router to a firmware providing QoS, or put the BB between the router and modem (if you have multiple computers using your bandwidth.).

Well according to their "Tech Support" They said no, but on calling back they said yes. SIGH..Got to love India Tech Support. I mean what are the odds I got a guy named TONY in India huh )) GOOMBA!!!! ( Hey I am Italian so I am allowed

Oh well if anyone else has tried it on a combo DSL/ROUTER please let me know.
