New guy and a few questions...

I sorta waited til the last minute before my trip over to Doha, Qatar...

But here goes anyway....


I will be leaving Wed the 21st to Doha, Qatar...


I am trying to find the easiest solution to call back to the states to talk to my parents, girlfriend and friends....


I have looked into skype and it seems to be pretty legit...

I have been told by a few people to go ahead and buy MJ and activate it with a phone number here in the states. Take it with me to Qatar and then just call from there..

Is anyone familiar with how Skype works as well ? I wasnt sure if I could pay the 2.95 a month charge to call back to the states etc.

I would say buy the MJ activate it here (try to get a local access number where your folks/friends are loccated) before you ship out and take it with you. Not only can you use it to call them they can use it to call you provided you are in a position to have it plugged in all the time.

Well my thoughts are the same.... But my other question is it smart enough to just use skype ? have you played with skype as well since I will only be there for 9 weeks ?

Hi,
On whether or not to just rely on Skype, Skype works reasonably well and is reliable. On whether to get a MJ, redundancy is always good if its affordable for you and communication is important. Personally, I'd use MJ as 1st option with Skype as backup and email as backup-to-the-backup. Just my personal preference.

By the way, if you do bring a MJ to Quatar, post a note here reporting back on how it works from there.

[Edit] Note, have only used Skype to Skype internationally, not to/from landline.

Sorry I have only used Skype to Skype so I am not a good one to ask about other uses. I think I remember someone else on this forum reporting a MJ working from over there.

Edit I did a search on Qatar and yes Gary reports it works acceptably there.
