Using Win XP Pro SP3 on VMware Player with Win2k Pro as Host

1 gb Mem, Athlon AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU, Asus MB, cable modem, VMware Player memory set at 396 mb.

Can't get it to work on my PC running 2 OS's (described in subject line above). After inserting the MJ into a USB port, it starts installing ok, but then freezes and hangs up the VMware Player as soon as the softphone appears for registration, and I have to reboot the entire PC. I left it running a couple of times to see if it would work through to no avail; it stays hung up for hours. MJ Support could not help- I ran thru their bag of fix tricks in 2 chats: Disabled both FWs, AV, added MJ 5060 & 5070 UCD Port exceptions to XP firewall, disabled "reboot" in Recovery. I could call back and and try to talk to an engineer I suppose, but I believe their responsibility ends with the VMware.

Also updated the USB Controller driver (was fine), doubled checked boot seq and USB config in BIOS, tried various USB ports and a powered hub. I formatted the MJ Flash. I even tried a trial version of VMware Workstation. None of that worked either.

Running out of things to try, I did the dongle-less mod just to see what would happen. It gets me all the way to registration without a hitch. But when I plug in the MJ for the serial no. upload, it restarts mj.exe and I am back where I started. I even uninstalled all files except the dongle-less mod, and after I plug in MJ for registration Win XP says its there, but the MJ program doesn't "see" it. Its something to do with USB or network- but I have no idea what MJ is trying to do at this point. Could it be a conflict?

I read on this forum that someone else is using XP on the free VMware Player with Enterprise 03 as host. I read on another forum that MJ does not like VMware, specifically the network device sharing- apparently another (XP) user was able to install MJ in the Host running XP only after disconnecting the network from the VMware guest OS.

I tried this MJ dongle on a (another) Dell PC running XP on my network, and it works every time. I have been through this forum and another forum, and MJ help. Can't find anythng else to try. Is anyone out there familiar with VMware? Can this work somehow?

You can try following the advice in one of the no-dongle threads for copying the already-registered files from your Dell PC to the Asus. No guarantees, but there is a lot of hope for you there.

That was one of the first things I tried- it made no difference. I tried it again just now too. Apparently, the MJ has to be plugged in to register, and when I do that, it locks up. Is there a way to get the ser number to the MJ server to register on a new PC without plugging in the dongle? If its on a file, apparently its not in mjusbsp, nor is it on the flash drive, as I copied those files as well to do the dongle-less mod in the first place. Maybe its in the registry somewhere???
