Problem with Magic jack error " warning you must plug m

Well Ive been on the chat with the magic jack people for about 1 1/2 hours and still no go so I thought maybe you people could help.

Ive had magic jack on my computer for about 7 months and worked fine today it started to say " warning you must plug magic jack in the usb"

Well we managed to fix it then got the error "Error Broken Storage"

we then fixed that, after all this the magic jack interface was up and working well after I rebooted the computer the problem kept coming back " warning you must plug magic jack in the usb"

the tech people told me " you must unplug it when you reboot every time" I said B*LL SH*T , never had to do this before and why now?

anyway every time I reboot the same error comes up and then it takes me to that stupid magic jack site ..

What can i do any help?

My only solution is to just throw it in the trash and forget it or try to give a shot getting it working again.

My Majic Jack just started doing the same thing. I have also had it for 6 or 7 months.....I even brought it to Italy last summer without a problem. Managed to get it working with the aid of the lame online chat. Worked for 2 or 3 days and today back to the same thing.
When it works it's great. But it's becoming a big pain!
Anyone have any ideas?

I would of thought there would of been a really quick resolution to this problem but with all the silence I guess I was wrong another magicjack that does not work?

Ok heres How I fixed it..

Download this program to format the drive

http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197

then:
INSTRUCTIONS:
1.Click on the above link and download:
HP USB Disk Storage Tool from Primary Download location.
2. Click Into start menu lower right of XP screen.
3. Click into MyComputer and find disk drive icon that represents Magic Jack it should be 17 or 18mb
large.
4. Run the HP USB Disk Storage Tool program,
Note: Make sure it says!
Device: YMAX magicjack 18mb
5. Download Updates from MagicJack.com to reload dialer software.

This worked ! Unbelievable the people from magicjack were lost and could not figure it out but someone from here did..

Shame magicjack!

This fix worked ......until I restarted my computer this morning. Then the same error message. This is getting old. I was ready to turn off my home phone line. But not yet!!!

Methinks you might want to double check that your antivirus software is up to date and maybe scan the magicjack on a pc you know is clean and up to date.

Aside from the possibility of infection damaging the magicjack, has anything changed recently? Is the mj being properly ejected prior to unplugging it? Have you begun using it on another or a different system?

For this problem to crop up every once in a while is, if not "normal", understandable. Things happen, especially to flash drives. For this to happen repeatedly, something is actively happening to corrupt the drive. If you're leaving it plugged in when you shut down, sleep or hibernate your machine, try not doing that. Windows isn't always very good at recovering from sleep and hibernation when USB devices are involved, especially those that act as drives and ESPECIALLY when there are files open on those drives when they go to sleep.

the only thing that has changed on any of the computers is that Magic jack UPDATED their software!

I know nothing , Nothing on mine changed.

Like I said SHAME on magicjack tech people for NOT being able to solve this yet we now fixed it using the above fix..

It didn't fix it for the other fellow.

I've been watching the "broken storage" topic for months. I'd like to add it to the wiki FAQ. But, I've not seen a definitive solution. Someone says to format the USB drive. Another says to run the Vista upgrade. Another says to use a special format tool from an untrusted web site (extremeoverclocking). Another says none of the above works.

My Majic Jack has been plugged into the same usb port for months. I shut the computer down completly at night and restart in the AM without un plugging the MJ.
Nothing has changed on my system. My AVG anti virus software updates every day and scans all the time in the backgroung. I have no spyware or malware.
I have tried unplugging the MJ before shut down since this problem started and still it gives the same error message when I plug it back in AFTER my machine has completly booted up.
Could it be that it's just broken?
And thier lame online chat/tech? support is very little help!

Quite possibly. If you're certain your system is malware free. It wouldn't be the first time a flash drive decided to go bad.

My computer desk has a built in powered USB hub which I have my Magic Jack plugged into. Any possibility that having it continousuly plugged into a powered port woud damage it? I had a flash drive go bad that was plugged into the same hub. I blamed it on the drive being cheap. Now I'm re thinking that.
I don't have access to the USB on the rear of my computer tower without a long dongle.

For the record, every computer's built in USB ports are part of a "hub" which is "powered." There's nothing unique about yours.

It's possible (but not probable) the USB circuitry is designed badly. One person reported that MJ's high power requirements burned out his USB ports.

Either way, it could be a good reason to invest in a powered external USB hub, or a USB PCI card for a desktop.

Same problems here, ie: "Warning: must plug into usb...", format the 18MB partition, dl the update, reregister serial. All works fine until reboot. Thus, it can't be a 'bad' flash drive, right? Or are we saying a flash drive which has become volatile.

BTW - Can't really see the diff between XP's Disk Management formatting and HP's Fromat Tool. Tried both, still have the dreaded "Warning..." problem upon bootup, removing usb safely or not.

I agree. I was hoping to dispose of Ma Bell. But this is to un reliable. It's easier to pick up the home phone.....listen to the dial tone and dial.
If there was a real person at Magic Jack to speak with maybe they could send me a new one. But the strange thing is worked for 7 months without a hitch...on my home pc......my laptop and my work tablet pc!
Now I get the same error on all 3 machines!

Just talked to the friend who originally convinced me to buy in... he's NOT having these problems. Said its been a 'long time' since any updates were prompted by MJ... hmmm.
Makes me wanna take my MJ up to his place (170miles)

same problem as everyone else, everytime i reboot i have to also format and reinstall mj..have talked to support when u can get them and no help.
only had mj a few months before this started happening..redid os and still have same problem..think we are getting runaround from mj...i will just keep formatting to so i can us my mj

Well I'm having the problem "warning, you must plug it in"

After reading a few other topics in here,,,, the one thing I haven't heard bought up was WINDOWS UPDATING....

We all know when certain updates come from microsoft,,, things start going wrong,,,,, case in point is when millions of people that had zonealarm on there computers suddenly lost ALL internet connection when windows did a update..

So I really don't think it is all MJ fault, just my 2 cents on this.

Hi all (I to am having the same problem, after formating ,I boot up and the the warning is back. Luckly I previously copied the majickjack folders to my thumbdrive now on boot up I format and copy my folders back and retart majickjack and use it untill I shut the computer down again. its a little inconvience but its worth the savings also everytime I have a new contact I make sure to save that back to the thumbdrive

It is a big pain to have to keep going through this proceedure everytime you reboot.........but as I said when it works it works great.
If it's a problem that started from a Microsoft update the you would think that Magic Jack would be working on a patch or update!

I'm getting all the above problems and have gone through 'that nonsense' myself many times these last few weeks. Have had MJ for about 10 months and didn't see these issues until recently.

My 30 years of IT experience tells me its something incompatible with system level stuff -- Vista upgrades, driver upgrades (or least like, my recent DELL BIOS upgrade).

Regardless, they should investigate an fix since it is probably impacting lots of MJ users.

I rather doubt it...but then again today anything is possible. Even so I doubt if it's related to this problem. I have tried the last "fix" posted here ....editing the regestry.............and again same problem. Since Radio Shack is now selling Magic Jack I was thinking of going by there and asking them if they have a way to speak with a live person or real tech support at Magic Jack!

I have read this whole thread and I keep asking myself "Why are they shutting off the computer at night?"
Is it to save electricity?
Is it to save wear and tear on the computer?

#1 The electricity you are saving is pennies. Is it worth all this problem for pennies every month?

#2 The computer will last LONGER if you leave it ON. I am running a computer I bought USED for $4 at the thrift shop. Who knows how many hours it has on it? And I leave it on ALL THE TIME so I always have a phone system.

I had this problem once on my laptop and it apparently was a loose fitting USB connection. But on the $4 computer I have never had the problem.

I am starting to think I have USB problems on my Dell XPS 420 since I have an almost duplicate OS and app environment on my Dell XPS 1330 laptop. I moved MJ to the laptop late last week and have not seen any of the problem I have had on my desktop -- so far.....

It is now happening to me, too.

1) I have a Thin Client. It does not get Micro$oft updates. Ever.
2) Worked for 5 months, now acting up.
3) It is also rebooting itself (the MJ, not the TC) at random intervals, whether the phone is in use or not. When it attempts to reload, Windows says not enough memory, so it fails to load.
4) Have never got the "storage error", just the "must plug in USB"
5) I have very limited memory available, so I have the Thin Client scheduled to reboot every night to clear that memory. MJ is known to leak in some cases.
6) I haven't tried any fixes other than unplugging the MJ and plugging it back in. I just reboot until it starts working again.

I think the MJ runs so hot it is frying itself (and/or the USB port) and becomes flaky after several months. Variance in mfg tolerances perhaps account for some failing and others not.

I wonder if drilling lots of air circulation holes in the MJ cover would help with heat dissipation?

I think that may be one of the reasons MJ errors are so varied among users. The units themselves seem to vary a great deal in build quality.

Mine won't burn you, but it is definitely "hot", not warm.

Maybe I should use it as a warming pad for a cup of cocoa! Keep it cooler and keep my drink warmer! Increase the value of my MJ!
