my keyboard and mouse fried when i plugged in magicjack

hi...i'm just looking for suggestions on why my mouse and keyboard would stop working when i plugged in my magicjack....could it be a driver issue?

If both the keyboard AND mouse are USB MAYBE you need a USB POWERED HUB. It is possible one or all of the USB on the bus is drawing or asking for more power than it can provide.
Just a thought..

Are your mouse and keyboard both USB? Off the cuff I'd suspect that your USB can't provide enough power for all 3 devices. Do the mouse and keyboard work if you pull out the MJ? Did you fry them or did you fry your USB?

If all three are connected to an unpowered hub, that would be the explanation.

What are they connected to?

just a regular mouseand keyboard....no usb at all

mouse and keyboard dont seem to work at all...even without mj plugged in

So you're saying the mouse & keyboard use the round PS/2 connectors?

I'll ask what all good sys admins ask (who deal with Windows machines) - have you rebooted w/o the MJ? Personally I find it hard to believe that MJ plugged into a USB controller would be able to fry the PS/2 controller.

Maybe it's a driver conflict. Or, maybe the motherboard can't handle USB and PS/2 very well. I have an older Asus motherboard that has some confusing settings in the BIOS regarding how it should handle legacy mouse/keyboard in combination with USB devices. I've never had any problems. But, the fact that it makes the distinction sounds like the opportunity for a problem exists.

For what it's worth, I've seen a few systems recently that have PS/2 connectors for keyboard and mouse, but checking out the system reveals that they are NOT actually connecting as PS/2 devices. Seems there's a PS/2 to USB adapter built into the motherboard (for lack of a better way of putting it) and they actually connect as USB devices. Because of this, it may still be a problem with USB power.
