MJ works on one PC and Not the other

Post by timbuk2 »

Does MJ require USB 2.0? I purchased MJ a year ago and finally got mad enough at my cable phone co. that I canceled it and inserted my MJ into my 5 year old Dell Dimension (front USB) crashes every time. I get the blue screen with USBSTOR.sys error, so I'm assuming it's a USB problem. I tried tech support and they kept insisting the following:

[ Go to control panel > double click on windows firewall > go to exceptions > click add port. > click on UDP under port number then type in 5060 on port number and magicjack on name then click ok.

Kiefer: Now do the same process,in add port > click UDP under port number then type in 5070 on port number and magicjack on name and click ok.

Kiefer: Add them individually. ]

I told them I was not running a firewall, anti-virus, anti-pop up, spyware, malware or anything else. I think they got angry and posted the same thing in BOLD all caps! So I hung up.

I slipped the MJ into my 1 yr old Toshiba Laptop with USB 2.0 and presto, works like a charm. I just didn't want it for my lap top, I need it on my PC. I couldn't find any info regarding USB problems. Couldn't find any help on Dell about needing to upgrade USB Drivers for Mass Storage Device or anything like that. I suppose I should upgrade my old machine that works like a charm to USB 2.0?

Thanks for any leads.

I can attest that it does NOT need USB 2.0. I ran it for about 11 months in a USB 1.1 slot and it worked fine. I would think that there is something wrong with your old machine - either the USB drivers or the USB hardware. You might try popping in a new USB card (www.dealextreme.com or eBay for about $8.00) and use the new ports (which will be USB 2.0) and see if that clears up the problem.

I seemingly updated the drivers for the two front USB connections, but still no go. Everything else I've plugged into them work normally, thumb drives, printers, scanners etc. Very odd.

As hsweiss said, MJ does work fine with USB 1.1. I have found a few Dell machines that have flaky USB controllers. A friend of mine has a Dell that will only accept 1 mass storage device plugged in at a time, it will never recognize the other flash or USB hard drive. He also had problems of cut-outs when using a USB audio interface (Tascam) with that system. We have formatted and loaded it with a fresh copy of XP and it still has the same problems. The only thing that solved his problem was installing a PCI USB controller card, and when using that he has had no problems.

I've spent 3 days trying everything else, guess I'll give that a try. Today I tried a AC Powered USB Port, computer stayed up much longer before crashing, but still crashed before MJ could load. I did manage to actually see the Upgrading windows, but didn't last long.
Thanks for the tip
