Do you always have to dial the area code?

If you are making a call within the same area code?

And when my computer sleeps, the magicjack turns off (which I understand) but when the computer wakes up the magicjack lights back up and can be used from the popup dail pad, but I get no dial tone on phone...any suggestions? only way I can get the dial tone back is to unplug and plug it back in to the usb. sorry about the run on sentence...

Depends on where you live. My area has overlay area codes and 10 digit dialing has been required for at least 10 years.

Disable sleep mode on your laptop. It needs to be running 24/7.

It also depends on where your MagicJack number is. Mine is 1400 miles away so all calls here locally are long distance and I have to dial the area code. I cant get a local number, or couldnt get one when I got the magicjack. I dont know how to find out if I can now or not. Sure would be nice.

Log into your MJ account and click on the change my number selection. If you have never changed your number before it is free and will say so on the screen. Select the new area code that you want and then display the list of prefixes. If there is one that you want you can select it and accept the change. The number change will be instant and you can't go back later. If there isn't one that you like, close the window (X in upper right corner) and your number will stay the same. You can't back out of the selection window, you must close it.

According to the FAQs on the MJ site, yes, all calls must be dialed using 10 digits, even to your next-door neighbor. Don't need the 1 though for long distance (works like a cell phone.)

When I dial numbers that are local to my MJ number I dont have to dial the prefix.

My MJ number is in Vista CA though I am in Texas. But I can dial my sister, who lives in Vista CA, with only 7 digits.

I live in Maryland, and we are on the overlay area code system, thus any number dialed from any phone must be 10-digit. It is conceivable that if I had two numbers from the telco, they could be two different area codes.
