Itied to call out and got no further than the dial tone. Tried to call in from another land line phone and received voice mail or what sounded like it. It was followed by a messge to my email address that said i had a msg and allowed me to hear the recorded msg.

When you dial out on a mgicjack phone do you dial 1-area code and number OR area code and number only? once dialed is there a hidden button on the phone i should push to set the call in motion?

Thanks for your efforts freind

There is no need to dial a 1 prior to your LD #.
No hidden button. All I do is pick up my phone and dial, that's it.
Again have you tried using a DIFFERENT phone with your MJ?
AND again can you dial out ok JUST using the softphone?
You said you called your MJ # and it went to voice mail. I am assuming you didnt not hear it ring. MAYBE you need a powered USB hub, OR try a different phone. Also make sure you do not have "Do Not Disturb" checked.

Not being amilar with the phone or the lingo associated with it kindly tell me what LD # is and a soft phone.

I will take your advice and try it with another phone and plugged into a different PC. My USB was plugged directly into my lap. I twill now be plugged directly into my desktop.

What about the MajicJack icon on the desktop? Must I double click it or just ignore it?

I'll get back to you on what happens, of anything

Thanks

You had asked if you had to dial a 1 prior to dialing your Long Distance # ( LD). Answer is no.
The softphone it what comes up on your screen after the Magic Jack software loads. It has your phone number on it as well as you can dial from it ( using a headset)
Only if you need to run the Magic Jack again ( if you closed the magic jack application) would you need to click on it's icon to re load it.

I had the same problem.

I was sent three MJ units, and set up unit #1 with my Vista laptop.

I didnt want it on my laptop, so I used unit #2 on my XP desktop.

I copied the config files from unit #1 to unit #2, to get my info in it, but when MJ started again, it re-wrote the original setup to it and my phone number was setup as 000-000-0000. Customer service told me I CANT do this, so I did it again, changed the files to READ ONLY and deleted the "DO NOT USE THIS DRIVE" file.

Now everything works fine, I have my account tied to two of the three units so I can have one in the bedroom and one in the living room on each computer..

Anyways, maybe this isnt related, but I only got a dial tone before I did this, I'd dial a number and then it would just pause and give me another dial tone.

Were you using more than 1 phone or MagicJack unit?

I have had this problem calling out before. I would just reboot the magicjack or reboot my computer and then I was able to call out.

I have only had my magicjack since January. In the beginning it worked fine receiving phone calls. then all of a sudden the calls started going to voicemail. My issue with this turned out to be my settings in Norton 360. For some reason it had blocked the port. Once I enabled that port in my software I was able to receive phone calls. I am assuming this happened after one of the updates was done on Norton. So if you have a security software running I would check your settings.

I expected when I purchased this MJ that you simply plug in a USB and a phone and off you go. Now I find it is far far more complicated.

Can I have a show hands how many were able to use their MJ as scribed and how many had problem such as mine.

All I did was plug it in ( after stopping all other programs first , especially any anti virus programs running) and in less than 5 min I was making my first call. It was perfect then as it still is now.

If you are using a firewall you may have to add magicjack.exe to it. I know when I got an update from them I had the same error until I added magicjack.exe to my comodo firewall.
Not sure if this will help you but it did for me
