MJ and dell vista laptop not working

Post by leQ »

i went about and around with the tech support in trying to get MJ to work on my new dell computer. what was happening was magicJack would initially start up with the blue light and explorer popping up with the contents of the drive, then MJ's blue light would go out, i'd lose dialtone, and no softphone. the steps MJ's chat support person gave me was to no avail. we'd reformat the drive, upgrade, but nada would work.

could it be that MJ needs to be hooked into a powered USB port? i have a sony laptop with MJ working just fine (same mj unit). what gives with this? i looked and didn't find another post having any answers to my dilemma.

appreciate any help here.
thank you.

Give a powered USB hub a try. I don't know if it's still an issue with newer model Dell laptops, but up to several years ago, it was a problem running USB devices such as external harddrives on Dell laptops. Where an external harddrive would work on a desktop or other brand of laptop, it wouldn't spin up when connected to a Dell.

Do a search on the web, there are discussions about insufficiently powered USB ports on Dell computers (and other brands).

If you have several devices connected to the USB ports on your laptop, try unplugging them leaving only the MJ, it seems the power is shared between the USB ports and there may be insufficient power to run several devices simultaneously.

thanks for the tip. i'll get a powered usb hub and see if that wont help matters. i thought about doing the trick of running mj without the dongle. that would certainly solve my problem, only when it came time to plug the dongle in (didn't i read that you needed to plug it in once in a while?).

but i should have thought about the powered usb hub. thanks again.
