MagicJack on Nokia

Post by tm19 »

This is intended to be a generic thread on getting magicJack to work on Nokia phones. Several posts mention specific models, but if we can get MJ to work on one model, it will apply to others. No one, including me, is reporting success so far. My descriptions below are intended for newbies (like me) who may be trying this for the first time. I am hoping that someone with enough time, luck, skill -- or all three -- will get this done, and post the results here.

Background
Nokia "smart phones", running various flavours of Symbian OS, have a brilliant, built-in capacity to operate as Internet phones (see the Nokia site for an official compatibility list). There are lots of pages on the Interweb showing walkthroughs, etc., for various VoIP services on Nokia phones, or for MJ on other devices, but not for MJ on Nokia.

Disclaimer
Any attempt to set up a connection to magicJack servers via your Symbian phone requires information about your particular MJ's Session Information Protocol (SIP). Obtaining and using this information may be a contravention of MJ's Terms of Service (ToS). Please search for this information elsewhere.

Fring
A service known as Fring might seem to offer some hope, but as has already been pointed out on this forum, the application will not allow passwords greater than 18 characters. [The MJ proxy user password is 20 characters long.]

Potential Help
A configuration guide at the main Nokia site is very clear. However, merely trying to substitute MJ SIP info has not been fruitful -- at least in my case.

Trial and Error
I have tried a number of permutations -- obviously, none has been successful. In my case, I am operating in a standard home network environment (i.e., router/NAT firewall serving a mixture of wired and wireless clients). My goal was to use MJ on my Nokia e51 over wireless LAN (WLAN).

Basic Setup
From the main "Home" menu go to Tools->Settings->Connection->SIP settings. Then Options->New SIP profile. You will probably want to call it magicJack, or something equally useful.

Once you complete your setup. you will go back to the "Home" menu and Connectivity->Internet tel. and then connect to the SIP service you defined above. If successful, you will be able to call via the Internet.

Specific Settings
Italicized numbers, letters, etc., should be filled in according to your situation.
  1. Profile name: magicJack
    Comment: Or whatever.
  2. Service profile: IETF
Comment: This is for access via your wireless router. I assume if you want data access via your mobile phone provider, you would choose "Nokia 3GPP".
  3. Default access point: Home
Comment: Or whatever your favorite wireless network may be.
  4. Public user name: Ennnnnnnnnn01@proxynn.city name.talk4free.com
Comment 1: The number between the "E" and the "01" is your MJ phone number.
Comment 2: I notice that my proxy server host name begins with "proxy01," whereas the list over at wikibooks has "proxy1." I don't know if this is significant.
Comment 3: The configuration client always inserts "sip:" before this user name; if you delete it and exit, it will be there the next time you return to this field.
  5. Use compression: No
Comment: Seems to be the usual option for other VoIPs.
  6. Registration: When needed
Comment: If you select, "Always on," the phone expects the wireless connection to be on all the time. This is a big battery drain, and so not recommended. If you select "When needed," and exit the set up program, you will see this prompt: "No SIP profiles using WLAN in 'always on' registration mode. Disable 'Show WLAN availability setting'?" My answer was "No" on the assumption that I wanted to be given more options about wireless availability when I dialed out.
  7. Use security: No
Comment: Again, seems to be the usual option for other VoIPs.
  8. Proxy server
    1. Proxy server address: proxynn.city name.talk4free.com
Comment 1: I have tried both the host name and the IP address in this slot.
Comment 2: Again, the setup utility will automatically insert "sip:" before this address.
    2. Realm: nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn
Comment: As I have it currently, this is the proxy IP address. I have also tried "talk4free.com" and the proxy host name in this slot.
    3. User name: Ennnnnnnnnn01
    4. Password: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Comment: This is the 20-character proxy password consisting of digits and upper case letters.
    5. Allow loose routing: Yes
Comment: Seems to be the usual option in other VoIP guides.
    6. Transport type: Auto
Comment: You can select "Auto," "UDP," or "TCP." I have tried selecting "UDP," which is commonly indicated on other VoIP guides.
    7. Port: 5070
Comment: This is the standard VoIP port and one that is opened up on my firewall.
  9. Registrar server
Options in this section are identical to options for the "Proxy server" section. Going by guides for other VoIPs, I tended to make all the entries the same. However, following the callcentric.com model, I also tried inserting "talk4free.com" in both the "Registrar server address" and "Realm" fields.
  10. When you are finished entering information, and go back to the main SIP page, you will see that this profile is "Not registered." You will then exit and go to the "Internet tel." utility, as mentioned above in the Basic Setup section. Try connecting. If it didn't work, and you go back to the SIP client to try some different options, it will tell you that "Registration failed" for this profile.
As you can tell, there are so many permutations possible. To get all the options exactly right at the same time, is the trick. I am open to hearing any suggestions, even from non-Nokia users, as to how to proceed at this point.

18 character limit on fring

Post by themathprof »

Fring is indeed a great possibility. I was in touch with Fring customer support and made them aware of the 20 character MJ Password.

They thanked me for the idea and said that they would consider it.

Perhaps if all forum members interested in using MJ with Wifi of a cellphone emailed Fring they would act on it.

Thanks OP. I spent hours trying different things, as you did, but without any luck.

Hopefully, Fring can fix their password issue and make it easier on us...

Just installed Fring, and was able to enter my MJ SIP credentials and it was successful well at least Fring says it's subscribed. Except, I can't seem to call anybody, or at least I don't know how to make a SIP call using Fring.

Can anybody teach me how to call using Fring.

For those who want to try their SIPs on Fring, here is what I did, btw my phone is a Samsung Omnia

1. Use stroths MagicJack utilites to get your SIP credentials
2. Download the latest Fring and install on your phone
3. Go to SIP
4. Choose Others
5. Enter your Username, this is the user start E your phone digits and 01
6. Enter your 20 char password, I believe they fixed the 18 digit limitation
7. Enter your proxy and add port 5070 (ie. proxy01.sanfrancisco.talk4free.com:5070
8. Subscribe
9. SIP is now available in fring, you can check by looking at the SIP icon, it should have a green check.
10. Just don't know how to call yet.
