Anyone receive any Telemarketing Calls on MJ yet?
Let me be more specific: Anyone who has NOT given out their MJ # (i.e., if you used it behind GrandCentral and/or blocked your Caller ID).
Have you received any Unsolicited Calls (also called SPIT or VAMMING)??
If yes, from what Phone #'s? Just curious, thanks.

I haven't noticed any lately, I hadn't thought about that possibility.. I would guess we should tho.. I'm hoping that MJ will have a number blocking set up planned for the MJ, if not, with all the "geeks" ( I mean that affectionately ) around here, we can come up with our own filters, whether they be set up through the phone at the end of the line or, something that resembles the spoof program that M Hack gave us.. GC wont be the answer there because a lot of the calls will probably be direct to the area codes.. Oh boy.. I guess thats a brand new can of worms to look forward to..You guys are always thinking ahead, that is so outside the box!!

I only use the MJ for outgoing calls. As such, I only gave out the number to a couple of friends for testing purposes when I first got it. Since then, I have received NO incoming calls. This is as it should be.
A handful of people have commented when the number come up on their CID, but I explained to them that this was an outgoing number ONLY and that they should only try this number in an emergency.

I hear you but it is human nature to call back the # that called you (and even save it on the Cell phone) -- even if you explicitly tell people "it is outbound only" or "don't use this #, use my GC #" ... trust medbarber wrote:I only use the MJ for outgoing calls. PS: One workaround (since you use your MJ for Outbound only) is to setup Call Forwarding from MJ to GC so that it goes thru GC's SPIT/VAM controls before ringing your other phones.

I have had it for over a month and no telemarketing calls.testing123 wrote:Let me be more specific: Anyone who has NOT given out their MJ # (i.e., if you used it behind GrandCentral and/or blocked your Caller ID).

My other defense against calls to my MJ number is my phone. I have a genuine Western Electric model 2515 2-line phone, vintage 1980. The 2500 series phones were the best analog telephones ever made. It has a real two bell ringer. The MagicJack device does not have enough power to ring the phone. That's why I tell people not to call the MJ number.testing123 wrote: I hear you but it is human nature to call back the # that called you (and even save it on the Cell phone) -- even if you explicitly tell people "it is outbound only" or "don't use this #, use my GC #" ... trust me![]()

No unsolicited calls to my MJ yet, but I'll register my # with donotcall.gov anyway.
I use MJ for outgoing calls only and GC to receive incoming calls. MJ outgoing caller id is spoofed with GC number, so people don't even know my MJ # at all. Works beautifully.
Outbound caller id spoof is very easy to setup. Read MagicHack's post here: http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/outb ... g-t68.html
I have so many inbound phone numbers (freedigits, IPKall, Groovytel, ringbranch, GC) but only give out 1 number for people to call and that is GC #. That way people don't get confused.
Btw, call quality on gizmo, freedigits, or freeworlddialup is much better than MJ, plus sometimes MJ incoming calls don't go through at all. So it's good to have more than one incoming call solutions all routed through one Grandcentral number. On my desk I have 5 phone handsets plus the cell phone. I use 2 Pap2's and 1 DTA310 (with leadtek firmware) programmed with gizmo, fwd, and freedigits. When there's a call coming in, all the phones ring like crazy. like I'm running a national emergency call center of some sort. lol! I do notice that the MJ phone failed to ring on more than one occasion.

dukeomaha: I think this is (or will be soon) a very common scenario. I find GizmoProject to be the fastest ringing of any of the other services you can connect to GC.dukeomaha wrote:No unsolicited calls to my MJ yet, but I'll register my # with donotcall.gov anyway.

But honestly, I find all of them (incl MJ) to have variable call quality -- probably depends on all sorts of things (like capacity, load, etc. etc.). And yes, sometimes the MJ calls don't come through completely.
Best we can do is have QoS on our network to ensure best performance and "diversify" services across a few providers like this IMHO.
Bonus is that it is quite cool to be on the phone and someone calls your GC # and your other "extensions" (via another provider) rings -- allowing someone else in the house to pickup the phone and take the other call.
