incoming calls don't ring on my phone

Post by sgrams »

I just bought a Majicjack, it seems to work alright but after the first incoming phone call the ringer will no longer ring, it just takes the caller to voicemail. I was on with the support chat for over two hours this morning but still it doesn't work, when I restart Majicjack it rings for the first call but then subsequent calls are directed to voicemail until I restart the program again. I checked around here but I didn't see anything similar. I have a router but its the same with or without going through the router, I have NOD32 AV but on or off its the same, I don't have a software firewall installed.

I forgot to mention, I have used with the same results both a corded phone and cordless phone, also directly on a USB hub on the computer and on a powered hub with and without the short extension from Majicjack.

edit again, I can make outgoing calls just fine with either corded and cordless phones.

Thanks for any help, I hope I can get this working,

update on no ring

Post by sgrams »

not sure how to update my original message.

I was in contact again with magicjack chat support this morning. I'm not sure if its what we did this morning or not but now the phone will ring for the first caller like before but now I notice it will ring for the next caller or maybe not, its intermittent now how it rings. It still always rings when its first started for the first caller but now as I said, its intermittent after that.

I can't be the only one here who has this problem but no one is responding so far, if you found a fix please let me know.

it just ain't that good

Post by sgrams »

my thought is magicjack is not what I want. Sometimes my phone rings when someone calls and sometimes not, sometimes I have a good connection and sometimes I get cut off, I will be returning my magicjack unit to Radio Shack and just pay the $40/month for a good, dependable phone to Charter, from my experience this is another of those rip off items that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Those of you who have working units and good connections...good for you...but from reading here on the forum it ain't all that great all the time...for myself, to have a dependable connection to work, family, and friends, I will not have this piece of junk take up any more of my time.

I have the same problem. Incoming calls go directly to VM

Post by TonyS »

Looks like you gave up on MJ and I'm about to do the same thing. I get the beeps that my callers hear on their end and I can't receive an incoming call. They all go to voicemail without ringing once.

I've upgraded the software, plugged in, out, etc... with no luck.

Anyone have a success story here or am I going to lose out on $60 with this piece of junk?

Yep - I've used it over 6 months with no issues. Lot's of other success stores here too. Have a little patience and follow some of the suggestions here and you should be able to get it going too.

Well, I did just upgrade manually and received the first phone call I tried. I guess that's progress. I'm hoping the beeping on the other end goes away as well.

Victim of their own success?

Post by QuickShot »

I think the problems you and others are having with incoming calls is because their system is way, way overloaded. In other words, they're a vicitim of their own success. Someone who just called me got an 'all circuits busy' message the first try, then 1/2 a ring the second time that went dead, then finally got through the third time.

How many hundreds of thousands do they sell every month?

Hopefully the company will put the money they have pouring in towards upgrading their system!

Try going to the MJ wiki for instructions on getting your service up and running to it's peak performance. There you can find instructions and links to things that work well with MJ and have been used with much success.

I had the same problem and it was user error. I forwarded calls for my mj to my other line. when I called from the other line, I got a busy signal. I thought there was something wrong- used support and everything. DUH, My bad. Just make sure you didn't forget that calls are forwarded

You could certainly be right they are too successful but then if that is the case and have intentions of making it right then I would expect some kind of sign on their homepage, something to let us know why those of us who bought a unit are having problems, I would think that would be the case. Radio Shack has a 30 day return policy, ad's on the internet have a 30 day trial period, those time frames should be extended if the company intends to fix the system.

I did what I could do to get the unit working, spending hours with live chat and searching for help on the internet, I don't expect anyone calling me to have to put up with dropped calls, poor connections, or messages saying I am not available when I am. It was a little un-nerving to go messing around in my computers registry with someone on a chat deleting things, I can find my way around a computer but I'm not that savvy to go fix things in the registry if it doesn't work anylonger because of some error.

Its advertised to plug in and work, it sounds like for many it does but for many others it doesn't. If anyone is having problems with their magicjack return it before you can't, don't wait to depend on some lawsuit to try to get your investment back.

I returned my magicjack unit yesterday and received a full refund from Radio Shack, I didn't feel that confident about the magicjack company and I didn't want to donate money that way to a business.

I want to "Thank" all of those who have posted their work arounds here and those who are hosting this forum. I am here because I was still connected by the notify button but now I'm off to give Vonage a try, it sounds like it DOES work and I can still save $15/month on my phone bill. Good Luck!

I have the same issue. If I restart MJ; I receive the calls. After a while; the calls directly go to my voicemail without ringing once. The softphone still says "Ready to call" though.
