The last couple of weeks, the MJ screen changes slightly from time to time, nothing significant, very subtle, once I noticed that the call history is blank, that always has the list of the former numbers I called and such, it appeared to be blank when I would start, so I figured it was just one of the many "updates/upgrades" that MJis known to do from time to time, it didn't worry me.
So yesterday when I plug it in, it asks me for my registration info, my email address and password, I give it, it boots up the rest of the way, no problem.
Today I plug it in, it asks me for my reg info again, and this time all of my contacts (saved phone numbers) are gone. So I unplug it, replug it and it does the same thing, I do this several time, one of the times it had a weird screen that said something about broken storage, I unplugged it, replugged it and again, it asked for my email and username. The MJ worked as far as making phone calls, and the 911 info was correct, it just didn't save my phone numbers, history or log in information.
I checked and my addressbook.xml was missing, fortunately I have a backup of this file, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that this file be backed up frequently, each time you add a new contact or edit an old one.
I copied the addressbook.xml back to the MJ unit, then pulled and replugged the unit, same thing happened, it asked me for my reg info and my contacts (and history) were blank.
I did the magicfix thing, same result, it would not save my phone numbers, I tried copying the xml file back to the drive, it would not save it.
I came here to this forum to see if there was a fix for this, I didin't see anything immediately, at least not with a fix, so I broke down, sucked it up and contacted MJs customer service (shiver!). Wow, I must say that they seem to have a much better CS now than the last time I contacted them, I believe this person had a good fundamental grasp of the English language.
I explained everything and instead of making me go through the magic fix by default, she had me format the MJ drive, she warned me that I would lose all of my contact info, which was OK, it was already lost as far as the drive/unit was concerned, and I had a working backup on my computer. So I formatted it, ran the upgrade to reinstall the software, copied the addressbook.xml to the drive, and viola! It works again.
I was afraid that I would have to get a new MJ unit and have to get a new phone number, I didn't want to have to go through that hassle.
Please, make sure you copy your addressbook.xml to your computer, it will save you a lot of headaches (and possibly heartaches!) in the future, I would hate to have to manually type in all of my contacts, and some of them I would be hard pressed to get back again.
