Magicjack says my OS doesn't work with MJ. It also says I have Windows NT 5.0. I don't. I have Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1. Has anyone else had this problem? Even better, a solution?

I did Joe, thanks for the tip. I should mention that I did everything under the Sun as suggested by MJ. I spent four hours chatting on two different occasions. They broke down and sent a replacement and it still doesn't work. Do you think there is nothing to the error message about the operating system problem referenced in my first post?

Maybe a re-install of Vista? Somehow it got corupted somewhere along the line? Maybe during an update?

Not being a Vista user I really dont know what else to suggest other than doing a Google search for Vista showing up as N.T. As I am sure you are not the only one with the problem.

Is it possible that the .exe is running in W2k compatibility mode? NT5.0 is Windows 2000, while Vista is NT 6.0. Magic Jack evidently needs XP (NT5.1) or above.

Maybe something in the registry is keeping the .exe in W2k mode even after a reinstall.

You could try Revo uninstaller and use the advanced mode to reset your registry and then do a reinstall of the MJ before going through a full Vista reinstall. It might save you some time. Revo cleans up pretty thoroughly.

Edit - someone posted a method of completely uninstalling the MJ somewhere in here. As long as it removes the registry entries, it might work as well.

Re-installing Vista sounds very scary to me. Is this something that I can do myself? I am pretty competant with the computer but reinstalling an operating system is beyond anything I have ever done. Thanks again.

You could do it yourself, but it might be worth trying to reset the registry entries and then re-installing MagicJack before doing a complete Vista wipeout.

The URL that explains the removal of MagicJack is http://uninstallmagicjack.com/

It shows the registry entries that need to be deleted. Pretty much anything to do with MJ.

Once done, you could try reinstalling your MagicJack. If I recall correctly, that'll just mean plugging the dongle back in.

If you decide to reinstall Vista, make sure you have your driver CDs ready. Also, the 64 bit version of Vista won't install unsigned drivers unless you do a workaround. Even your wireless will be offline if the driver isn't signed. Basically, that means that you can't even get online to get help installing drivers needed for the rest of your computer.

I had to use an XP computer to help me get Vista 64 going when I upgraded from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit. It can be frustrating.

One more thing - have you tried the magicjack in another computer to verify that it really works? I'd suggest you find another computer (ask a friend) and try it to see if you can get it working before going through the headache of reinstalling Vista. BTW there are a number of threads stating how people have been having problems with MJ on their Vista machines since the last update.

OK!!!! Thanks to all. I did everything I could from each of the uninstalls (v 1,2, &3). I couldn't do all of any single one. Then I searched and deleted any trace I could find of anything to do with MJ.

rebooted, plugged it in, and it worked. I have been goofing around with this for 2 months.

Wow.. I'm running the same OS (64bit). I have had no problems.
I assume you removed the MJ and re-booted then re-installed the MJ?
