Deactivate MJ's Voicemail?

I'm not sure if this has been addressed before. If so, please post the link.

I'm looking for a way to deactivate MJ's voicemail, so I can give my home phone answering machine a chance to pick up. MJ picks up at 4 rings & my phone answering machine can only be set to 2, 4, 6, or 8 rings. I can't set my home phone answering machine to 3 rings to pick up before MJ.

The only solution would be to deactivate MJ's voicemail or to have a feature that would set MJ's pickup at higher than 4 rings. Any ideas that would help?

When magicJack first came out, one could access the settings for the voicemail like turning it on or off, or setting the amount of rings whereby the user could set it to six so the standard house answering machine could pick-up first. That was a good feature.

But that has become a thing of the past, and the users of MJ are loosing ground on having any control over their MJ features.

I heard somewhere (not tested) if your change the outgoing msg on your MJ to less then 1 sec it will cause the VM to not answer..

Recording and saving a 1 sec outgoing message will kill your voicemail. I accidentally did it last night trying to "erase" the greeting I previously recorded.

The net effect of the killed voicemail on my magicjack is the phone stops ringing on the fifth ring. The caller is disconnected, no voicemail, just dead air followed by a dial tone.

I didn't know I'd be killing the voicemail last night and, being a new user of magicjack, never got around to counting how many rings it took previously before it went to voicemail. FAQ's say four rings, and I just assumed I'd be bumping the setting on my answering machine down to three (beating voicemail to the call) but it works fine set to four. The answering machine picks up before the fifth ring disconnect.

This seems like the perfect fix - except I can't get it to work. When I try to record a message of a second or less MJ reverts to its standard voicemail greeting.

How can I get this to work?

I have my answering machine set at 4 rings, with no problems. I did a test with my cell and the answering machine off, the phone on MJ rang 5 times, but I only heard 4 rings on the cell before VM took it.

My answering machine is set to 4 rings & MJ voicemail picks up before the answering machine. That's my whole problem.

Update on extending rings by killing voicemail with a one second OGM:

Due to an unrelated(?) problem I recently experienced - mJ going straight to voicemail instead of ringing, which in my case meant straight to disconnection - I had my voicemail reset.

The number of rings before voicemail picks up remains the same. The mJ picks up on the fifth ring with the reset voicemail, just as it did with the killed voicemail.
