Got to the office (low DSL speeds) and installed on Desktop, everything went just as the inventor dreamed. Within a few minutes, I was making a call.
Got home, plugged it into the desktop, same same. Just like in the movies. Everything is perfect.
Pulled out my Samsung tablet, stuck the dongle in, same same same. Sheesh, if life could be so simple.
Pulled out laptop #1, inserted the dongle, the whole system hung. Nothing worked, 4 hours chatting with customer support. (Nice people but I really think they are themselves unaware of the trouble we can get into so they are NOT prepared to render first aid.) Sheesh, four hours for nothing.
Took out laptop #2, insert dongle, same thing.....hang hang hang.
Now I am no software guru or IT genuis but I am familiar with machine code and writing assembly for microprocessors, so I'm not FOB.
I took Laptop1 to the office as my mission was to get to the bottom of WHY MJ would NOT work and WHY my laptop would hang.
Listen: It's impossible to take into consideration every possibility when you write code for hardware. It's just not possible. You are bound to run into conflicts even if you are writing architecturally correct for architecturally correct hardware.
I started ripping software out of laptop #1. I did a scan using Spyware Terminator to locate any droppings left over from old audio programs like WinAmp that I removed a few years ago. Sure enough, there were old .dll's in the winamp folder even though the program was long gone.
Got rid of those.
Then I got rid of Nero suite, I got rid of other programs dealing with music audio blah blah blah.
I also DISABLED the CDRom in device manager. I rebooted, stuck my dongle in and guess what: it came to life and loaded up as nicely as on my desktops.
No tricks, messy creams or powers.
Then I took my Norton SystemWorks CD and loaded it into the CDRom tray. It booted up perfectly even though I had disabled it in device manager, now everything is beautiful.
I used the service from my home (where the service is MUCH faster) from my desktop over a wireless connection and had a 20 minute conversation with an old friend in California that I have not seen in two years
So the old "softweare guy blames hardware guy" and vice versa is still alive and well.
Try the above. Especially if your laptop is hanging.
