Landline busy signal when using MJ

Please help me. I am not technically savvy and am worried that I might be making a big mistake here.

I have one single phone line with AT & T that is used by both my landline and a DSL. I recently purchased magic jack and followed the installation instructions. Now I find that when I make calls with MJ, people calling my home get a 'busy' signal. This worries me. I do NOT have long distance with AT & T and I am afraid that MJ may actually be using my AT & T landline to make these long distance calls.

I have a friend who uses MJ as well and she says that this should not be happening, as in, when MJ is in use, it should not be taking over the landline. She says that her family members are able to use their landline, even if one of them is using MJ.

Please, please, please help. I don't want to end up paying my beloved AT & T hundreds of dollars in long distance calls because MJ used my landline instead of my DSL to make these calls.

What am I doing wrong?

The phone you use to call with Magic Jack, should be plugged directly into your Magic Jack box. There are other ways of configuring your system, but I'm sure they would only confuse you, based on your technical level.

Bottom line, if the phone you are calling on is plugged directly into the Magic Jack box, then there is no way it can affect your land line.

If you are doing anything else, you should stop.
