What will be a 'local' call?

If I get a MagicJack phone number for my Area Code, will my neighbors be able to call me as a LOCAL call? Or are they apt to end up with charges on their phone bill?

What matters is whether the exchange (the prefix) is in your neighbors' local calling area.

If you are able to pick a phone number for your MJ that is within their local calling area, then it will be a local call.

You can find out the local exchanges in the first pages of your phone book.

My concern is 'will I be able to choose my own prefix, as well as my area code?' I don't want to find that friends won't call me any more because its long distance for them.

Tell me what area code and prefixes you need. I'll look them up and see if they're available. (from the customer portal). Which city you need is helpful.

You can choose among all offered prefixes within an area code. Obviously, not all prefixes are available.

In my area there were only two prefixes to choose from, mostly all phones work but my phone at work which is in the same local calling area says its a long distance number, i think cuz the phone company doesnt recognize that prefix yet.

From what Ive read in previous posts its only a matter of time til the ph.co. gets it working, unless i call in and complain....
