Optimal xp specs having cut in cut out issues

I am so glad that I found this forum. I really hope that through it I can get my new magicjack working well. I want to use it for my business line so I need it to work predominately without issue.

Wondering a couple of things.

1) First what would be some optimal hardware specs for XP

Currently have 150gb harddrive
1gb ram
3600+ amd athelon (Tm) 64 X2+ dual core processor

2) What is the optimal bandwidth

I think maybe this is what my issue is. I think I have a 640K connection and my office is in my basement and I don't have the best internet connection. Picked up a new wireless N router and wireless N card for my PC. And the connection says good usually around 65 mbps. Do I need to bump up my bandwidth. Does the magicjack really chew up my bandwidth.

Just trying to figure out what changes I need to make. When I use the phone it is like myself or the person that I am talking to will continually cut in and out. The only thing I can think to compare it with is a cd or movie skipping.

Any help and or ideas to improve my magicjack service is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Joe I actually had done a bit of searching around on the site. I know the choppy sound is an issue. I just wanted to be clear that I wasn't experiencing something a little different. Also I did the jitter test and mine is huge at 4400 ms.

I just noticed so much stuff out there that I thought it might help more if someone could tell me if something was blatantly wrong based on my rough specs.

I am looking at adding a gig of ram but that doesn't really look necessary after looking around a bit. But I think I have a stick laying around.

I am also thinking about bumping to a 7 M connection.

Tried to do some searching on Qos adjustments but I am having a hard time figuring anything out. Saw something on Tomato but it looked to be for a specific router.

Update......

Hopefully this sticks.

Popped in the extra gig of ram

reran the VOIP test and the jitter rate dropped from where it was testing between 3700 ms and 4400ms obviously way off the chart to between 1.1 and .7 ms !!!!!!

never for the life of me would I have believed that would have made the difference. I will probably beef up my internet connection anyway. But made two test calls and everything seems crystal clear!!

I will be crossing my fingers.

Also just to note before running the test in the first place and adding the ram I had changed the magicjack task to high priority.

Adding ram had nothing to do with dropping your jitter - that's competely a function of your ISP. Something on your connection has changed - obviously for the better. That horrendous jitter was causing your problems. Either your ISPs connectivity went thru the toilet and they've fixed it, or they've simply made major improvements.

Just for grins, I run my MJ on a 1.1 GHz Celeron (PIII) with 512M ram on a fios 15/5 connection. I've changed my proxy and upped the MJ process and it works fine. CPU usage is maybe 25% when I'm in a call. Web surfing when in a call causes no side affects.

I agree with hsweiss, the RAM would not change the internet speed or quality. It was more than likely a coincidence that occured when you powered down your computer to install the RAM. The best chance you have to get a great response from the magicjack is going to be by bypassing your wireless and running a cable from the computer to your router. I am currently running a computer that has been sitting in my garage as my mj "server". It is a HP Pavilion about 8 years old. Intel Celeron 500mhz, 256 MB of RAM. I have 6 MB down and 1.5 MB up internet speed.
