Plugging in MagicJack causes computer to reboot.

Every time I plug in MagicJack into my machine it reboots about 10 to 15 seconds later, it will be stuck in an endless loop of reboots until I unplug it. I tried the official tech chat, but it is under maintenance so I thought I'll just ask here. Is there any way to fix this? I'm running XP pro, with all the updates. Tried both the ports with and without using a hub, the problem is still there. It does work fine on another machine as far as I know on my other machine, but that machine's hard drive is dead and until I get a new one I need it to work on this one.

I decided to look in the eventlog. Here is what it says:

I installed the usbaudio drivers that were linked on another topic thinking that should work. It still causes a reboot, but seems to get a bit farther before triggering a reboot.

I'd suggest you update or reload your USB drivers. Sounds like something is corrupted. Have you tried inserting any other USB devices and does the machine crash?

Everything else works fine. Its just the MagicJack triggering a reboot. I've tried unplugging every usb device except my mouse just to make sure it wasn't a conflict there. I'll try reinstalling the USB drivers and let you know.

It would also be a big help if you could find another computer to try inserting the MJ - that would either point to or eliminate the dongle as being the problem. If inserting it into another machine caused it to crash, I would think that the dongle was bad and you could try to get the tech chat folks to replace it for you.

Reinstalled the USB drivers, didn't work. I asked my neighbor to see if it would work on his machine. It works on his just fine. If it helps he has win7 on his machine.

Well, at least you know that the MJ dongle works. So that means there is a problem with your machine that reinstalling the USB drivers doesn't fix. You might try to fully remove MJ from your machine and trying to reinstall it. Here's a transcript from a session I had with tech chat where they instructed me to fully remove it and reinstall it. Worth a shot....

Ivan: Please unplug your magicJack. Now go to "Start" in Windows and click on "run". In there write regedit and press enter.
Ivan: Now click on + sign next to HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE.
Ivan: Click on + sign next to SYSTEM
Ivan: Click on + sign next to CurrentControlSet
Ivan: Click on + sign next to Enum
Ivan: Now find folder called USB. Right click on that and click on "Permissions". In permissions click on the
Ivan: check mark called "Allow" to the right of "Full Control".
Ivan: Click Ok.
Ivan: Now click on + sign next to USB and then find the two folders called "Vid1307", right click on one at
Ivan: a time and select delete.
Ivan: Now click on - Sign next to USB.
Ivan: Right click on Folder called USBSTOR and allow permissions.
Ivan: Now click on + sign next to USBSTOR.
Ivan: Find the folders called "CdRom&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev"
Ivan: and "Disk&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev"
Ivan: Right click on those one at a time and delete them.
Ivan: Now exit Regedit and then plug your magicJack in

None of that is there. I even did a search in the registry for it. MagicJack hasn't had a chance to install itself on my machine yet. My machine will say "Found new Hardware USB Mass Storage Device" and a second later reboot.

I am not sure this will apply in your situation, however it is worth mentioning since it sounds oddly familiar.

I ran into an issue getting my MJ to initially be recognized in XP SP3 (OS Hang/reboot) because of a conflict between the MJ and Nero Essentials 7. Roxio's suite of software can also cause similar issues with the MJ. If you do have either of these programs installed on your system, you might try removing them, then installing your MJ. If MJ works well, then reinstall the Nero or Roxio with the current patches from their respective site.

If you do not have either of the programs I mentioned installed, and the USB troubleshooting does not resolve your issue, you might consider reinstalling XP with all the current updates.

I had daemon tools lite on the machine and uninstalled it. It still causes a reboot. Maybe it'll help if I list the programs I have run on login.

Perhaps one of these programs are conflicting with it?

Well you can install the free Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel and un check each program one at a time and see if any of them is the culprit.

I've never used Sandboxie, but if it works the way I think it does, I wonder if it is not allowing the MJ to install where it was intended. Just a thought.

I just ended up using it with a very stripped down version of XP in VMware for now. I'm still looking for the cause though. Thanks for the help, and if I can find the problem I'll let you know.

Please do let us know if you do find the real culprit.

For some reason, I keep circling back to Sandboxie as a possibility in that as I understand it, MJ utilizes IE's interface in it's design for displaing ads. But one would think this would be more of an issue after the MJ has installed. Scratching head, sorry!

Update:
I've uninstalled sandboxie and fixed the HID Input Service problem. The problem is still there. There was also a program called Sentinel System Driver I have not idea why it was installed or what did, but from what I could fine it is used for LPT and USB sucurity devices. I've also uninstalled that, and running the SSDCleanup utility for it to make sure it is totally removed from my system.

I have found the problem. The driver I use to use Linux swap for my windows paging file/browser cache is causing the problem. I left the MagicJack plugged in and seen a BSOD flash real quick on boot. I've disabled the automatic restart on system failure so I could read it. Using MagicJack with the SwapFs-i and possibly the SwapFs which it was branched off of will cause a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error and will BOSD. I'm going to notify the SwapFs-i developer and let him know. Until the problem is fixed I will keep running MagicJack in a VM.
