uTorrent/Router Issue?

Post by mj455 »

I am using WRT54GS V1 router(open WRT firmware), magic jack on its own clean dedicated computer(xp pro).

Every time(on a separate computer) I launch utorrent "other side" complains of low, choppy, bad quality call, but always clear on my side. I close utorrent they say I am clear as a bell. Upstream/Downstream most times far from maxed - so not bandwidth issue. Thinking router issue, I also have a WRT54G V8(open WRT firmware) that I don't use and wondering if setting it as an access point will help? Any ideas? Thanks

Sounds to me like a QOS ( Quality of Service) issue. When you sound choppy to someone it means Utorrent is uploading ( I keep my u/l speed at 10kbs) using to much bandwidth. I can go as high as 20kbs before I start to sound choppy to someone. When they sound choppy to you it is your d/l affecting your MJ sound quality.
You can try to adj your QOS setting ( if you have one) or just lower your U/L transfer rate to 10kbs. Works for me.
I have DSL with 6mps down and 1mps up.....With a Gigaset SE567/8 Series router/modem on Frontier ISP.

Thanks. No luck yet so far, played around with QOS on the router - it did improve a little when I assigned router's port #2(magic jack pc) as premium and 1,3,4 as standard. I also set max download/upload cap in utorrent settings(800kBs/8kBs). Wouldn't think I would have problems with MJ being on it's own dedicated computer. Calls are 100% crystal clear when utorrent is not running. Think using another router as an access point for main pc will work?

Here's an older thread http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/voic ... t3803.html it might be that using a different firmware on your router may help.

I had a different problem but it was related to my linksys router
http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/magi ... t4551.html

When I got my MJ I was using a Dlink router and had no problems. Then I bought a Linksys wrt54gl router and had all kinds of problems with my MJ. Basically, I couldn't use it if I remember right.

I changed the firmware from linksys to Tomato. It works perfectly now.

I'd guess it's your router.

Did you have this problem before the clean install? Did you always use the same router?

Many thanks to all! I now have Tomato firmware installed on my wrt54gs and set QoS for dedicated Magicjack computer' (mac address) to highest class. No more issues! :D
