Does Magic Jack require port forwarding when using an ATA?

Post by CaptWho »

I've been trying to get my MJ account up and running with an ATA for months now with no success. I originally purchased the device about a year and a half ago.

I dumped the MJ and found my password (20 characters, all caps) and loaded all the configuration information into a SPA-2102. I played around with that for weeks and didn't get anywhere, so I found a RTP300 and have been trying to set it up, thinking that it might just be trouble with the SPA. No joy there either.

I've read that port forwarding in the upstream router is required, but that doesn't make any sense to me because the dongle works fine without any port forwarding. I'm having a little trouble configuring my router to forward those ports and I don't want to beat my head against the wall for too long if it's not needed.

Any constructive suggestions appreciated. :?

You did not mention anything about MJProxy. Are you running MJProxy on a Router or your PC?

Umm, somehow I must have missed that. So I still have to have a PC up and running at all times unless I get another router that will run MJProxy?

There seem to be some different versions... I"m seeing MJProxy and MJMD5. Is there a difference?

MJProxy and MJMD5 are one in the same. Try this link:

http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/toma ... t7055.html

That will get you a script that is required to be loaded on your head end router in order to make it all work. If you do not have a Linksys Router of a particular type that can be loaded with the Tomato firmware, you may be out of luck, or at least have to use a PC/Thin Client.
