bought at walmart, already registered?

Post by mike4him »

has anyone had this problem? i'll save you all the details:

i bought my MJ at walmart on sunday. i plugged it in, installed no problem, popped up with window to start making calles. the panel already had two contacts and record of some calls made in January of this year.

It never asked me for an email address or anything I would normally associate with installing new hardware.

This seems like it is already registered to an old user. Walmart put it in new packaging and re-sold it to an unassuming customer!

Now I can't get any emails with vmails of course because i'm not registered with the number and can't make those changes

I am now out of the country until December 19th.

any suggestions?

Other forum members have reported the same problem. Upon close inspection of the packaging, they found a small concealed slit that was used by the previous customer.

I would say to exchange it immediately, but you've indicated that is impossible.

You're stuck with it; it's probably not worth the effort and expense to mail it back to someone to exchange it on your behalf. If you can't continue to use the pre-owned one you have now, you'll have to order a new one (perhaps with the help of someone back home).

Can you call customer support to see if they can reset the device which would allow you to assign a number and register the device?

Assuming that the previous individual that use this device is not using the credentials on an ATA, you could get the credential and install on an ATA, along with MJProxy and bypass MJ voicemail. The same could be achieve with other third party software on your computer. I would chat with MJ to see what they can do from their end!!

That's a great idea!
It should not have been resold after returning.

I'm curious; Are there people out there who are purchasing the MJ units and registering them, stripping the SIP Credentials and then returning them to the store for full refund? If so, this would suggest a loop hole in this whole MJ deployment. Shouldn't Magic Jack have a way to detect when something like this happens and be able to disable the SIP credentials?

I guess It is too late to return mine to Walgreens :-)

This has been discussed before. I'm sure it has happened. However, it would be more intelligent for that SIP stealing person to return the MJ as "defective", so Walmart will simply destroy it. Otherwise, they risk having a conflict with the future MJ's owner. MJ certainly could detect more than one instance of the same SIP credentials on the network.

I guess people missed the point where the OP stated he took his MJ out of the country.

It's not Walmart's fault he waited until he was out of the country to inspect his purchase. They have a return policy that does not include an infinite return deadline. It's usually 90 days.

I sympathize with the OP, to a certain extent. However, it would have been logical for him to test out his purchase before he left the country.

Warning in the past six months I've purchased two items at Walmart that turned out to be empty boxes,Purchased a wiper blade at Dollar General Store turned out to be an old worn out wiper blade.

I've learned to dig deep for a selected purchase and double check the package for tampering.

So who's at fault?

The always honest Walmart for reselling what they know is repackaged crap ? Naaaa ... they'd never do that ...

Or the "possibly" honest buyer ?

A socal delema ...

It's simple. Walmart has a policy of correcting their mistakes within 90 days of purchase. That is extremely generous.

If the buyer doesn't properly inspect their purchase within that time (and, I must say, within the country), then he has accepted the product as-is.

There is still a concept of integrity in this world. We are all free to come up with any rationalization for compromising our own integrity.

However, I imagine that's how the first domino fell, and set off this entire chain of events.

Unfortunately, there are stores who would resell defective items. Brandsmart USA routinely puts defective items back on shelves apparently as a matter of policy. At Home Depot, it is more the desinterested employees who do that, as I repeatedly observed. Even more common is the practice to sell non-defective, but used and returned items as new.
But generally, the return practice in the U.S. is probably the most liberal in the world. In most other countries, returning a non defective item is often impossible, especially if it was unpacked or used.
I remember a few years ago in the Netherlands where a store refused to take back a (realatively expensive) light bulb which i bought there an hour earlier and which was defective, in spite of original receipt and packaging. According to them, I should have tested the light bulb before leaving the store ! After I started a big scene, the supervisor agreed to make a one time only exception and exchange the bulb.

Using Walmart and integrity in the same response is beyond rationality ...

Like "the state law requires you to wash your hands before resuming work" ...

Again, any way you want to rationalize your actions. It's never your fault is it?

Someone's lack of integrity caused them to return an MJ they had already registered, without disclosing it, because "Hey! It's just Walmart. It doesn't count as cheating, if I cheat them." As a result, we are having this discussion, today.

A second scenario is the original customer was honest, and said he simply didn't like the MJ when he returned it. A Walmart employee, who didn't realize that once registered, the MJ is damaged goods, simply put it in the pile for restocking. A mistake, sure, but they provide a way for those mistakes to be corrected; a 90 day return policy.

No matter which way you rationalize fraud, dishonesty, or lack of integrity, it doesn't make it any less real. I'm sure it diminishes your feelings of guilt.

Yes, the OP can LIE, and say he just bought the item, and lost the receipt. From your statements, two wrongs make a right. The ends justify the means.

Common sense, dictates that one inspects their purchases as soon as possible, certainly at least within the return window, and definitely before leaving the country.

Why can't anyone take responsibility for their own actions, anymore?

I think what you really really wanted to say was:
Yeah like Walmart ... bottom line is they REPACKAGED a USED MJ and RE SOLD it ...

If that does NOT happen this thread does NOT happen ...

The Boogey Monster did it.

You don't really know what happened. That won't stop you from taking up America's new national past time: Be the victim!

No one is saying he shouldn't return it to Walmart. However, the only way for the OP to do so, is to lie, which you seem to be encouraging. He carelessly left the country without inspecting his purchase, and won't make it back to the U.S. within Walmart's return policy. I bet he uses the product as much as he can during that time.

If that's the moral high ground you speak from, you may want to buy a boat.

Dude, you need to get off your soap box! Trying to assign blame to the OP because he did not test the device before going overseas is ludicrous. The world is not perfect, but the OP brought an MJ device with his/her hard own money with the expectation that it is in good working order. I can think of a few scenarios under which he could have purchased the unit without having the time to test it. He could have brought the device at the last minute on his way to the airport for example.

Let me ask you this; Does Walmart test their tainted Toys before putting them on shelf? You know, the ones imported from China with high lead levels. Clearly your rantings has risen to that of a buffoon. Give it up!!

You too, are free to come up with your own rationalizations for fraud and dishonesty. That doesn't make them any less wrong.

It's easy to make excuses for our actions. Of course, I have done the same. That doesn't mean I go around encouraging others to do so, or pretend that what I did wasn't wrong. That is the crux of my argument. No bleeding heart victim rant, like yours, that will change that fact.

Yes, I'm a lone Walmart employee on a crusade to police the MagicJack Support forum in order to stop one fraudulently returned MJ. All of my almost 400 posts on this forum were solely to lull everyone into believing I am just a regular MJ nerd. Secretly, I'm on the Walmart patrol.

That's genius.

It couldn't possibly be that some people still have standards of ethics and personal responsibility. No, not in your world.
