MagicJack / Sleep / Hibernate

Post by Nisko1 »

It appears that MagicJack doesn't work if the PC goes to sleep or hibernates. If that's the case, Do I need to not allow my computer top sleep? Is there a workaround? Also, when I wake up my PC, I cannot shut down MagicJack in order to restart it. Basically, it freezes my computer when I try this. Is there a workaround for this? Even when I shut it down using the Task Manager, it won't restart unless I reboot my PC. Workaround for this?

If you read here and on the MJ site, your computer has to be ON, not sleeping and not hibernating.
You have to turn those features off or MJ will not work when your computer initiates hib or sleep.

How the heck do you even GET your PC to go in sleep mode with MJ running? I have to stop it to put mine to sleep.

I am wondering the same thing.
I have win7 and it will not do that (even though I never do like my PC to sleep, hib, or shut down on its on).
When I shut down or restart it has to wait for magicjack or I have to force restart.
Maybe with older computers it's not like that? I don't know.

Mmmmmm!! A lot of interesting replies. I'm using Windows 7 and, it seems, I can't put my system to sleep or I create a problem and have to reboot to MJ working again. Oh well...........

Can someone comment on turning the Hard Drive Off function? If we need to keep the PC on, is it, should we, turn the Hard Drive off?

If you turn the hard drive off, then the computer isn't on.

A modern BIOS supports hard drive suspend with the computer still running. It's another power saving feature on most of today's computers. The BIOS will spin it up again when required.

How can I tell if my BIOS supports the hard drive being down - but the PC can be awakened?

Your BIOS will probably include an opening screen category named something like "Power Management" - that's the section which would include the drive settings mentioned by the previous poster ... you can also look in Windows' Control Panel for a similarly named section which will show the power-saving sequence which usually goes Screen Saver >Monitor low power >Hard drive spin-down in order of implementation after inactivity timeout

You're looking for something like this. As Dr.Patient said, look under power options in your control panel-

I am using MS Windows 7 Home Premium. Does MJ require specific power settings to run properly? If so, please tell me what they are. Does the hard drive have to run all the time? One poster suggested that I go to Device Manager>Universal Serial Bus controllers>then all the USB Root Hubs. For each hub, He told me to go to Properties>Power Management>then uncheck each box that reads: Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. I did this - but when I went back to check the checkboxes, they were all checked again. Something in the OS must be changing them back. This shouldn't be (I should get a notice of some kind) - but it happens every time. While the boxes were checked (for a whole day), MJ seemed to be working OK.

Just a guess, but did you make the changes while logged in as administrator?

Oh - and in the above example, the hard drive, hibernate and standby should be set to "Never". I just happened to grab a screen shot where they were not set that way.

The changes may stay permanent instead of just for the one session.

The changes may stay permanent if I log in as administrator? I was logged in as an administrator / user but not as the 'big cheese' administrator. I don't know how to set up that profile.
