Standalone PC to run MJ

Post by jackedin »

Hi,

I have a P3 800MHZ, 512meg RAM and 40 gig HD. PCI USB card that is 2.0. The built in usb on the PC is 1. Will this PC run the MJ? If so, will it run it well.

Thanks for your input.

Keep any other processes to a basic minimum. 512MB should handle the latest update. Can't tell you how well it will all run, since each PC can have its own "unique" issues with MJ. Be sure to plug the dongle in the USB in the back, and don't use the cheesy USB extension that came with it.

Your answer is no. The computer will complain when you don't have them plugged in. Your computer won't even boot if those perriferals are not plugged in.

Hope this answers your question.

Why not? I have setup multiple systems running teamviewer on them. I don't have a mouse, keyboard or monitor hooked up to any of them. As needed, I remotely log in with teamviewer to check them out.

SOME bios's choke when they do not "see" a keyboard attached on boot up.. So your mileage may vary.
Of course after all is booted up one can attempt to remove it. Not really "SAFE" to remove a keyboard if it is a PS2 connection to the motherboard. USB ones should be fine. That being said I have never tried to remove mine when my PC was already powered up and Windows running. So if anyone has let us know how that worked out.

I did have that issue with an older system a few years ago, but I was able to get around it (if memory serves, I was thinking eventually, "hit f1 to continue" without the mouse/keyboard timed out). But, I have removed a PS/2 mouse from a running system without any effect.

On another topic relating to the OP, the new magicJack software is quite a bit more memory intensive. I had to disable quite a few items in the startup on my Revo. With 512MB RAM, not sure how it will run.

It can be hit or miss removing any hardware other than USB with the PC powered up. I once damaged my MB JUST by pulling out a serial connection.

For what its worth - I'm running MJ on a 1.1GHz Celeron with 512 MB RAM and it runs just fine. Even the latest release. Uses about 20-30% of the CPU when in talk. Runs just fine with Firefox and Skype running (in fact, my wife is using MJ right now while I'm typing this in Firefox). It worked fine with the built-in USB 1.1 (but I had to use the extension cord) and it still works fine with the $5 (eBay) USB 2.0 PC card. BTW, this machine will not boot w/o a keyboard.

I would be curious to know if you can enter the BIOS and see if there is a "halt on:" setting to get past the lack of keyboard issue. If not, no worries. I just tried it on an older P4 system I have downstairs and the system booted up without a keyboard or mouse ... so, I reckon it is one of those it depends upon how old the computer is or potentially which BIOS it has.

Re: memory: On my Revo (Atom processor with 1GB RAM), with v2 of magicJack, the computer was not responding in time when a call was coming in. Because of the latency, no caller ID was being passed to my Panasonic handset. Redpepper made a few suggestions and in addition, I disabled quite a few items at startup and the issue appears to be resolved.

before i used a thinclient, i ran MJ on a 900 pentium. no keyboard or mouse. Fresh install of windows xp. ran beautifully. I have it to my brother and he uses it daily with MJ. I now use a thin client and it works great with very little ram. It makes a big difference what runs on the computer.

I am a novice (62 years old). I wanted to buy a thin client to use with MJ. I saw ads with "embedded xp". What are those ? If I buy a thin client without "embedded xp" , will I have to attach a hard disk to it, to run xp. Second question, Do I need to connect monitor, keyboard, mouse etc. to thin client during installation. And whether these can be removed after installation is complete. Please help

I'm an oldtimer too, 69. Most of what I learned about thin clients was on this forum. 4th one down on the main menu. There's whole lot of info there. Lot's of reading but if you skim it it's not too bad.

Welcome to the forums Lots of good people and great info.
