As far as the openssl license, it's not gpl and is free to use in commercial code, as long as somewhere in your app you have a notice that "This product includes cryptographic software written by Eric Young ([email protected])"

Being a private company, I don't think it will be easy to discern the profitability of the company. They may be hoping for a buyout from a larger corporation next week, or they may plan on offering the same service for years to come.
