Now I get an error message about an unrecognized version. MJ CS Chat claimed it's not compatible with XP SP3.

I had XP SP2 updated with SP3 and more, and MJ was working fine ... until I had to re-install and used a slipstreamed XP SP3 cd, which Microsoft activated.
I'm legal. But that's just not enough.

Sorry bout all this. Now, Do U mean you did a clean install of OS using slipstreamed disk? If so, why did U do this? If you did this, before you did, did you have another installation of XP and then, when final version of SP3 was added to critical updates.....you downloaded SP3?
Sounds as if the slipstreamed disk might not be legit....or properly done. Where did U get it? Did you burn it yourself using yr original one? What do U mean MS "activated" the disk?
When you now go to Widows Update....and MS genuine advantage checks for validation, what is the result of that?
Open Add/Remove in Control Panel, check the 'show updates" box and tell us what U see re patches and esp SP3.
PS. I should mention that in this, my go to system.....I have sP3 and my MJ works perfectly, AND, ACCORDING TO YOU, YOURS DID AS WELL BEFORE WHATEVER HAPPENED TO LEAD YOU TO THE NEW INSTALLATION, RIGHT? So I have no clue wut the tech chat human was smokin.

My slipstreamed XPproSp3 fresh install was done correctly and legitimately, and activated and validated. Yes, by Microsoft. [Why is irrelevant.]
MagicJack works fine with XPproSp2 updated with Sp3. It just didn't work with a fresh install of XPproSp3.
I suggest MJ isn't checking correctly for XP version information.
I plan to check against each Microsoft update - one at a time. Sigh.

Well....tryring to hep and being ingenuously curious...hopefully logically and differentially in the troubleshooting CRESCENDO.....THE RELEvance OF THIS AND THAT within the helper's sensibility OUGHT NOT TO BE JUDGED WITH ALACRITY via the toxic of frustration. Agreed?
For me....the possible relevance could have involved the reaosn you did the clean install IN THE FIRST PLACE.
I do Not believe the MJ software reads the version. It may, however, be.....if YOU ARE CORRECT, that MJ wants to be installed before downloading SP3 and that SP3 causes some kinda conflict if present before mJ gets installed. BUT WE NEED SOMEONE MORE SAVY RE THE NUTS AND BOLTS THAN i TO DITTO THIS.

FYI, slipstreaming fully integrates a service pack into an installation, so that it doesn't have to be run separately. It's a method installers use to save hours running separate service pack updates, but there's no uninstall or recover or restore if this method is used.

Were I you.... I would be pithy and pragmatic and waste o more time in isometric struggles with no upside. given, it appears for reasons unknown....you did a clean install with yr slipstreamed disk......I would think you are early in the setting up yr system to your needs phase.
Accept the facts and start over. Do a new install with your original os disk, install yr MJ., and then download SP3 which, you surely must know comprises all the post XP service packs and hotfixes except for the few which they brought forth the post SP3 IN RECENT WEEKS.
Then, naturally U would visit them and choose which not critical items U want, etc.
