Not recognizing attached phone on Mac

Post by why-him »

Here's the configuration:

Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz

System Version: Mac OS X 10.5.7 (9J61)

Plugged in a brand new magicJack - it installed and allowed to register, get a phone number, etc.

However, when the softphone starts up, it complains that there is no phone attached - even though there is. The error message is:
"No telephone found. Please re-plug your magicJack"

Other symptoms:
  • Can dial from the softphone - the call goes through, but the other side can't hear (yes there is a working microphone on the computer)
The attached telephone has a dialtone. However, dialing does not seem to "register" i.e, the dialtone does not cut off when dialing.
This is reminiscent of a problem I had on a Windows Thin Client once. There the solution was to download a missing audio driver.

Anyone know how to solve this problem on a Mac? Or figure out what's going wrong?

Many thanks,
Yosh

Have you had the opportunity to test your mJ on a Windows PC? I would try that and see if you get the same results.

If so, I'd blame the hardware and then, when you have about 3 hours of free time, get on mJ tech support chat and ask about replacement options for your mJ.

Are you plugged into the Mac directly, or through a USB hub? If hub, is it a powered USB hub?

Have you tried it on a different Mac, or different USB port on the same Mac?

Format magicjack drive and run Mac upgrade without unplugging

http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/upgrade.dmg

Click on Menu of dial pad and select Volume/Headset control, then choose telephone option from there.
Happy to help you !

Sounds like you just have a bum device. If you bought it retail, and aren't invested in the phone number you first got, merely return it to your retailer and get another one.

Or, go through the process of getting mJ to replace via their tech support chat...

(The retailer option will be much less painful. Even if you didn't buy at retail, um, you could still, uh, probably figure out a way to return...)
