Information about MJ+ before 'upgrading'

Post by TNewton »

I currently have a Magic Jack and it's due for renewal. I am looking at trying out the Magic Jack Plus. My main reason is because it will 'free' my computer. I have read some of the threads here with more interest in MJ+.

Here are things that I am leery about and wondering if anyone (who has MJ+) can tell me if it's improved. Please note I want to use the MJ+ without the computer.

1) Caller ID: With the old MJ I had to use some resistor contraption to get caller ID on my Panasonic KX-TGA820CB phone. I also have to rely on the soft phone to know who is calling on the other line (call waiting).

2) Duration of calls: I am a stereotypical woman who talks a lot on the telephone (door is open for jokes  ). MJ allows for 60 minutes of call duration then disconnects and 'locks' me from calling back the same number for at least 5 minutes. I have been used to this during the past 2 years, but just inquiring if that has changed with the MJ+. Not something that is a huge issue though.

3) *Dumb question warning* Computer freezing: Since MJ uses the computer I find it freezes up the computer or when I am typing and receive a call and happen to press the space bar, it disconnects the call. I am assuming the MJ+ will not do this? So things I am doing on the computer should not interfere with calls and my computer will run 'faster'?

4) MJ Number: Can you for sure switch your number from MJ to MJ+. I am reading different answers on this. I live in Canada, if that helps. And what do I do with the old device? Can it be connected to another account (As in can I give it to a friend to use and hook up another number)?

Another question would be, besides having the option to use MJ+ without the computer, is there any other differences? Has anything else not listed above improved? Anything that would refrain me from purchasing MJ+?

Thank you so much for your time. I hope you could understand everything. I have a sleeping child in arms :)

I can answer 3 and 4

3... The MJ plus runs through your router... So you would need a router if you are not wanting to use the pc... There should be no more issues with the pc freezing up..

4... As of right now there is no number porting available in canada...

Don't need "porting" if you are just adding the Plus to a current MJ account. You can run both devices with the same phone number, if you so choose.

Yep Nailgunner is correct as you are mixing up terms. Porting and TRANSFERING your current MJ number to the Plus, 2 different things. PORTING is taking your landline ( or mobile number) and using it on your Plus and canceling your landline or mobile in the process. Transfer is just that, moving your orig MJ number to the MJ Plus. BOTH are possible in the USA, only the ability to transfer is possible in Canada, as of right now.

Thank you so much for answering me back. I do think the terminology is being confused. I just wanted to make sure.

I think I will find a store that sells MJ+ and buy it in the next few days.

As far as questions 1 and 2. Hit or miss on number 1 as it depends on the phone you are using and as far as number 2, MJ network will still limit your calling time. So much for call anyone and talk as long as you want ( if you talk REAL fast that is :))

Oh and very smart asking questions and doing research BEFORE buying it, you have no idea how many dont and then realize AFTER they buy it they need the Internet for it to work, yep..
I read this forum for a full year prior buying my MJ in Aug. 2008.

So good job..

Multiple users have reported in here that it has worked for them. That said, what worked yesterday might not work today, as they have, can and will change their policies without any prior notice. If it's an important issue to you, I would suggest you invest 5-10 minutes and log on to customer service chat to make sure nothing has changed.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I have the Comtrend wireless ADSL2+ Router CT-5361T. I am not sure if it's a known brand in the States, but it's a wireless router my IPS uses. That should be good, right?

I am in Canada and had no issue with phone# from old MJ to MJ+. Just register your new MJ+ to same account and you keep your exisitng phone#. In fact you are at an advantageous point since your regular MJ is expiring. When you get your new MJ+ be sure to plug it into computer first (only needed for first time set up) and follow the instructions. You want to be sure to register it to existing account.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Paul. It helps out a lot.

Do you think I should wait until March 3rd (when my year sub. is expired) to hook up MJ+ or will it just add 12 months to what is already there? Don't want to loose out on 'time'.

If I were you I would set up MJplus at least a week before hand. You would only lose a week but it ensures you number is preserved and you can still make calls on old MJ if something is not working right.

It should all work within minutes though.

PS: also worth mentioning.... you should also ensure your old MJ is not set to be auto-renewed in any way. Go to my.magicjack.com and search through the "Account" menu. If you do this before you register your new MJ+ then the option will only be for your old device. If you do it after your new device is registered, then ensure the option you pick is for your old device.

I purchased the MJ+ and have it all hooked up and 'running'. I get Caller ID without the resister (good), however Caller ID on Call Waiting does not show up.

Outgoing calls are 'tinny' Incoming calls are good.

Any clue about how to fix the Caller ID for Call waiting? I tried doing a search on here, but came up with nothing.

So I am being told that Caller ID wont work for the second call. Only the first call. So what is the point of getting the MJ+???? I can't see whose calling. Total crap.

Anyways, Thanks anyways. I guess I resolved the 'issue'.

Not sure who told you that, but call waiting caller ID works just fine on my Orig MJ, I would "assume" it works on the Plus as well....

See I really HATE 'talking' to them. I spoke with two different 'people' and they both made my head hurt. I should have copied the convo here for you all to have a good giggle. Frustrating.

I wrote "I am having issues with the caller ID not working for Call Waiting". They still kept on telling me to varify the problem in detail so they can 'serve' me better.

They even resorted to 'teaching' me how to work the flash feature on my phone  Then they told me that sometimes the Caller ID will either show up with either Name, Number, Name & Number or what is programmed on your phone.

I explained that nothing happens besides a beep when a person calls me when I am on the phone. They told me that MJ does not have that feature that it just beeps to announce you are receiving a call.

So to clarify, when you are on the phone, and a call comes through you do, in fact, get a beep AND you get a notification of who it is? It's not in my head, right. That is a feature... I am not making it up? *dripping with sarcasm.

Next they are going to blame my phone....

Thx BTW for all your replies.

Help me please. Am I not communicating correctly? I am still having the same issues and no one on support is helping me. They keep telling me how to use my phone. Now because of an setup.exe my line is done. When someone calls it goes to an ad. my phone is not communicating with the MJ+ device. AND I still am having issues with call waiting ID and my subscriptions are screwed. please bare with my frustration. Here is the last converstaion.

Please wait for a site operator to respond.
You are now chatting with 'Zenia'
Your Issue ID for this chat is ??????
Zenia: Hello, how may I help you?
Tonia: There are two things. One is my subscription and the other is not receiving call waiting ID on my phone.
Zenia: Does magicJack have traditional “Call Waiting”?
YES. magicJack offers complimentary Call Waiting.

To use Call Waiting with magicJack and magicJack PLUS:

Press the "FLASH" button on your telephone to switch between calls. If you don't have a flash button on your telephone, tap the hang-up button.

To use Call Waiting with magicJack APP:

Press "Accept" when you receive a call while on the line. The original call will be placed on hold. You can switch between calls by clicking the callers' numbers listed on the softPhone LCD display.

Tonia: I know how to use my phone.
Zenia: Please allow me to inform you that we cannot receive call waiting ID as of the moment.
Tonia: What the issue is, is that I don't receive caller ID when there is a call waiting. Please tell me you don't have it, because when I use the Magic Jack Plus on my computer it shows up in the soft phone.
Tonia: There are other users who have caller ID for call waiting, so you need to actually help me with this issue.
Zenia: One moment please...
Zenia: Please plug in your magicJack device to the computer for troubleshooting purposes.
Tonia: ok
Zenia: Let me know once you are done, please.
Tonia: I am setting it up now, just waiting for computer.
Zenia: I will be right with you.
Zenia: Let me know once you see the dialpad.
Tonia: I see it now.
Zenia: Please click the link to download and run the magicJack upgrade:
Zenia: http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/m ... kSetup.exe
Tonia: running it now, waiting...
Zenia: Let me know once you are done, please.
Tonia: Ok everything is up.
Zenia: Please unplug your magicjack and plug it back in after 3 minutes.
Tonia: ok
Zenia: Let me know once you plug it back to the computer.
Tonia: ok
Zenia: Thanks.
Tonia: do you want me to have the soft phone up as well? Magic Jack plus does not autorun
Zenia: Yes, you need to.
Tonia: ok thanks. Sorry for that dumb question.
Zenia: Let me know once you are done.
Tonia: ok the soft phone is up
Zenia: Then try to check if you encounter same problem.
Tonia: ok
Zenia: Let me know once you are done, please.
Tonia: Now it totally does not work. I think the soft phone is confusing the old Magic Jack device with the Magic Jack Plus
Zenia: Please unplug the regular magicJack.
Tonia: It's not!
Tonia: I am using the Magic Jack plus, the Old Magic Jack is in a box with all my computer things.
Tonia: I have the magic Jack plus pluged in, I think the soft phone is messed up and connecting to the old device account.
Tonia: It wont even communicate with my phone.
Tonia: *My actual phone.
Zenia: Thank you for waiting. I'll be with you in just a moment.
Zenia: Do you mean the caller ID will not work.
Tonia: I told you above that now that the phone line does not work, your updated screwed everything up. I think the soft phone is not communicating with my Magic Jack Plus. I think its set up to communicate with my old device. My friend tried to call me and she is getting a Magic Jack ad.
Zenia: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be right with you.
Zenia: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be right with you.
Zenia: One moment please...
Zenia: I am transferring you to one of our top 10% agents as rated by our customers. Please hold while I transfer you.

Sounds like some system isn't handling Leap Year quite right.

See if it is better tomorrow.
